Who We Are:
The Internal Services Department (ISD) supports all County of Los Angeles departments and commissions, with an annual budget of over $885 million and 2,162 budgeted positions, along with over 5,120 contracted workers in facilities management, IT, environmental, administrative, purchasing, and contracting services. ISD is the County's trusted partner and provider of choice.
The Opportunity:
We are seeking an experienced and qualified candidate for the position of Computerized Graphic Designer (Sign Painter) in the Facilities Management Division. The candidate should have strong knowledge of graphic design software and equipment to produce signs, banners, stencils, patterns, decals, acrylic cut-outs, and other signage.
The responsibilities include designing, painting, and laying signs and posters using software and plotters; doing all types and styles of lettering by hand; preparing surfaces; matching colors; cutting stencils; fabricating signs; estimating materials; maintaining work records; performing work in shop or field; driving to work sites; making signs via silk screen process; removing lead paint; working from swinging stage; supervising subordinate workers involved in sign making and painting duties.
Qualifications:
Six years of sign painting experience, including surface preparation, design, layout, and gold or silver leaf lettering, with at least one year at the journey-level. Must possess and clearly express this experience in your application under "Experience" and the Supplemental Questionnaire.
Journey-level experience means working independently with minimal mentorship, problem-solving, following regulations, and procedures accurately.
License and Physical Requirements:
- Valid California Class C Driver License required at appointment.
- Physical Class 3 - Moderate: standing or walking most of the time, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting over 25 pounds, frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
- Keen color perception required.
Assessment and Eligibility:
The process includes a structured oral interview assessing job knowledge, software skills, interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills, weighted at 100%. A score of 70% or higher is required to qualify and be placed on the Eligible Register for 12 months.
Work Schedule and Application Process:
Shift: 5/40 work schedule. May require nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
