Description
The Hachette Book Group is seeking a Managing Editor for its Basic Books Publishing division. Basic Books publishes about 90 nonfiction titles a year across a broad range of categories, including business, economics, politics, science, history, biography, psychology, and current events. This position reports to the VP, Executive Managing Editor. For more information, visit basicbooks.com.
Responsibilities
- Work in close partnership with the Basic Books publisher and the editorial and art teams on seasonal lists to ensure timely delivery of manuscripts, copy, and sales materials
- Collaborate with the editorial, art, and production departments to schedule and monitor titles through the entire production process
- Manage an initiative to refresh active backlist titles
- Develop or refine procedures to improve existing workflows and ensure that interdepartmental best practices and standards are maintained
- Lead and participate in various interdepartmental meetings, such as production meetings and status meetings
- Maintain title data and communicate changes companywide
- Review ONIX metadata for accuracy and completeness, and coordinate off-cycle releases with editorial, sales, and ONIX support teams
Requirements
- 5+ years managing editorial experience, preferably in a trade house
- Solid knowledge of the entire trade publishing process for narrative nonfiction
- Proven communication and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, collegiality, and assertiveness to meet deadlines
- Demonstrated team leadership and mentorship skills
- Strong organizational skills, with an aptitude for process development and innovation
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, electronic copyediting, coding, and Adobe markup
- Solid copyediting and proofreading skills
- Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style (17th and 18th editions)
The compensation for this position is $80,000-$90,000, depending on skills, experience, and location. We value diversity and are committed to inclusive hiring practices.
