Overview
WSJ. Magazine and The Wall Street Journal’s Style section are seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Creative to lead an award-winning photography and design team, helping shape WSJ. Magazine’s visual identity across all contexts and platforms.
The ideal candidate is an expert visual storyteller with a deep understanding of the print and digital design process; of photography, video and print production; and of the best of what social, newsletters, and event extensions can offer visually and creatively. They will thrive in a fast-paced but warm, highly collegial environment, and be ready to push a strong brand forward with infectious energy and enthusiasm.
WSJ. Magazine sets the bar in defining luxury style, providing best-in-class fashion editorial and muscular feature journalism to an affluent global readership. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional visual and design sense; a deep roster of industry contacts; a personal passion for luxury lifestyle and culture editorial; a shareable, reader-first approach to new visual and creative ideas; a unique and irreverent eye for exciting new collaborators and industry trends; and be a dynamic motivator, manager and mentor to staff.
You will:
- Deliver energetic and relevant art direction and creative strategy for WSJ. Magazine and Journal style editorial across all channels, including digital, social, video, events and our flagship print edition.
- Directly lead and manage the design and photography teams, supervising and managing the entire production lifecycle for visual content and design.
- Conceptually develop and drive pitches for visual content for all platforms, from Instagram Stories to a 12-page print portfolio, with a discerning eye for what works best in each context.
- Identify opportunities to thoughtfully evolve or refresh existing visual presentation, particularly around emerging platforms and franchises.
- Bring energy and creative flair to growing the digital visual language of the overall WSJ. Magazine brand.
- Dynamically lead and manage a close-knit team through complex creative projects, fostering a supportive environment that encourages creativity, learning, and development.
- Have excellent communication and diplomacy skills to work with artists, celebrity talent, internal commercial teams and many other high-profile stakeholders on multi-month projects.
- When applicable, travel to shoots or other major creative events, providing leadership on set and ensuring each project is captured with excellence to meet WSJ. goals.
- Supervise the creation of visually compelling materials for new projects and pitch presentations (talent references, conceptual outlines, moodboards, etc.) and understand how to be visually persuasive.
- Ensure the top-tier execution and ethical standards of WSJ. Magazine and the wider Wall Street Journal are consistently met.
You are:
- An inspirational creative leader with a visually ambitious portfolio of outstanding work and at least 6 to 10 years relevant experience art-directing and designing at a creative media brand or similar.
- Passionate about the prospective wide reach of excellent, best-in-class visual work.
- A strong people manager and excellent communicator with a proven track record of motivating teams and fostering new talent.
- Excellent time-management and prioritization skills, deploying people and resources to meet a variety of goals across different deadlines.
- Flawless and attentive budget management to make the most of all resources.
- Audience-first and platform-agnostic: visually fluent and equally motivated to see good visual design and showstopping photography on your phone as in a printed magazine or a live step & repeat.
- Cheerfully adaptive and entrepreneurial about new opportunities, both editorial and commercial, as our brand grows.
You will report to the Editor in Chief of WSJ. Magazine. This is a full-time position and is based in our New York office.
To apply, please submit a cover letter describing your experience and interest in this job, a detailed résumé and either a portfolio link or five creative-work examples that showcase your capabilities.
