Job Summary
The
Communications Specialist
serves as a seasoned reporter and copywriter on the "Transportation Department beat," using words and/or photos to promote, showcase, and celebrate the activities, initiatives, and people of the Transportation Department who are making life better here at UCSF and in support of the UCSF community and its mission. Must be absolutely comfortable in developing stories and stories idea, taking photos of events or subject matter experts. These stories shape our reputation, allow us to show progress and excellence, and are powerful vehicles for informing our stakeholders and rank-and-file staff, of the myriad of projects that Transportation tackles-large and small-that foster a positive environment in which to teach, heal patients, and research potentially life-giving treatments and other discoveries.
For the CLS staff Internal Marketing Group:The incumbent will focus on stories regarding our Transportation staff and partners, and under the direction of the Associate Director, Strategic Marketing and Communications. The Communications Specialist works closely with centralized communications teams and colleagues-- and may also partner with eleven sibling CLS units to initiate, plan, and implement a cohesive internal strategic communications program to build an understanding of organizational goals and priorities and foster engagement among employees. Also, the Communications Specialist works closely with the teams to ensure consistency with the organization's external communications, especially through postings on department-specific social media platforms.
The successful incumbent will be experienced in seeking story ideas, writing stories, interviewing staff at every level of the organization, taking photography (camera provided) all in service to raising awareness of our organizations' efforts at Making Life Better Here, for the UCSF community. This is a high-contact position, and the incumbent must be comfortable communicating with colleagues and interviewees at regular intervals in person (primarily) as well as via Email or other digital communications. Types of editorial that the incumbent will oversee include: the weekly or bi-weekly internal newsletters (e.g., 1 minute/1story staff e-news), short feature highlights, feature story reporting, and frequent contributions to Pulse, UCSF's digital newsletter and the main Campus Life Services internal e-news, the Making Life Better Letter. The Communications Specialist manages Transportation's social media presence in coordination with CLS Marketing, using metrics to determine platform effectiveness, appropriate and compelling content, and frequency of posts. The incumbent will also serve as the content editor for the department website, and posting service alerts on the official UCSF Mobile App, following established workflows, approvals, and protocols. Because we are always hoping to have our stories included in the UCSF Pulse newsletter produced by UCSF Office of Communications, it is preferred that the Communication Specialist is fluent and knowledgeable in writing all journalistic pieces adhering to the AP Style Guide. AP style is the standard by which all news stories appearing in Pulse and other publications produced by the UCSF Office of Comms are held.
Involves serving as UCSF Transportation organization's roving reporter and communications lead. The Communication Specialist is seasoned in developing, implementing and executing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary communications program. The program is driven primarily by feature story length articles, short, single-topic Emails, at least one weekly internal staff newsletter, updates to the department website, and print and digital communications to alert riders and customers when there are interruptions to Transportation services or programming. Portfolio of work will also include promotional copy to elevate Transportation's reputation and positive perceptions by the UCSF community. This involves work in two or more communications disciplines OR work not otherwise covered in other communications job families.
***NOTE: Based at Mission Bay with travel to other UCSF sites. Hybrid, 2-3 days/week on campus.The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. Department Description
CLS Marketing and Communications department - This group provides marketing leadership for the diverse business and services lines of Campus Life Services. In our current services portfolio, we provide marketing and communication strategies, copywriting, and PR editorial services across multiple platforms: websites, social media, digital signage, the official UCSF mobile app, and E-mail marketing. We rely on CLS Documents & Media for design and production services. Additionally, we may partner with other UCSF groups to provide consultation and/or communication strategies on UCSF-wide projects or initiatives. We also partner - and provide content to - CLS Tech to support development and marketing of the official UCSF mobile app and other emerging digital platforms and services; and the development of analytics reports to measure marketing effectiveness.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and 3-5 years relevant experience and/or equivalent experience/training.Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and/or health sciences.Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and/or broad general audiences.Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills to interact effectively with a variety of clients, support staff and vendors.Ability to handle small to large multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum five years of content writing experience in print and digital media.Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
