Overview
Houstonia is looking for a creative, plugged-in News & City Life Editor who can tell unique stories about Houston, its people, and its culture. This editor writes most of the content for the News & City Life section, assigns stories to freelancers as needed, and occasionally contributes to other verticals. Houstonia operates as a daily digital outlet and a quarterly print magazine.
This is the perfect opportunity for someone who is endlessly curious about the world around them—especially about Houston—and who wants to produce high-quality, thoughtful coverage of the city that you can’t find elsewhere.
What you’ll do
- Ideate and pitch stories that go beyond the news of the day, carefully choosing those that will resonate with Houstonia readers and add to the conversation
- Write digital stories on a weekly basis, from shorter news-you-can-use and service pieces to profiles and longer features
- Write stories for the quarterly print magazine, which can include topics outside the editor’s main beat, such as travel and the arts
- Write a weekly newsletter every Monday
- Assign and edit freelancer stories
- Build articles in the CMS
- Proof galleys for the print magazine
- Coordinate with the art director on the visual plan for all stories
- Occasionally coordinate with the director of digital engagement on promotion plans for stories
- Attend weekly meetings
- Other responsibilities as needed
Who you are
- A journalist with at least two years of experience at an editorial publication
- A creative and original thinker who loves to experiment
- Passionate about local news
- Familiar with CMS and project management tools
- Familiar with data analytics tools like Looker, Chartbeat, and Google Analytics
- Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style is a plus
