Location
This role can work remotely from anywhere in the USA. You must be legally authorized to work in the US. Bixal does not provide visa sponsorship.
What will you do?
We are seeking a UX Designer to support the Secure, Performant, Reliable, and User-Centered Experiences (SPRUCE) IDIQ contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This role will focus on enhancing the Veteran Transition Experience, ensuring that transitioning service members (TSMs) and recently separated Veterans (RSVs) can easily access the benefits and services they need. The UX Designer will work closely with human-centered design (HCD) experts, product teams, and government stakeholders to create intuitive, accessible, and user-friendly digital experiences for Veterans and their families.
This is a full-time position contingent on contract award by our client, with a defined performance period of up to one year. Responsibilities- Conduct usability testing, A/B testing, and heuristic evaluations to refine digital experiences.
- Analyze user feedback, analytics, and behavioral data to optimize Veteran services.
- Collaborate with researchers to map user journeys, pain points, and service gaps.
- Iterate on designs based on findings from user testing and stakeholder feedback.
- Work in Agile development cycles, ensuring UX/UI designs are integrated into sprint planning.
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Engineers, and Content Designers to create cohesive experiences.
- Participate in daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and design critiques to improve design workflows.
- Advocate for human-centered design principles across development teams.
- Ensure all designs comply with Section 508 standards and follow best practices for inclusive design.
- Apply responsive design principles to create experiences that work across multiple platforms.
- Bachelor’s degree, plus at least four years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Proven experience in UX/UI design, product design, or interaction design.
- Strong proficiency in Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or similar design tools.
- Experience working in Agile environments, collaborating with developers, product managers, and researchers.
- Understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1, Section 508) and usability principles.
- Ability to design for complex, data-driven digital experiences that meet user needs.
- Strong skills in user research, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing.
- Empathy & User Advocacy: Deep understanding of Veteran needs and how design impacts their experience.
- Communication & Storytelling: Ability to translate research insights into clear, compelling visual designs.
- Collaboration & Adaptability: Ability to work cross-functionally in a complex, mission-driven environment.
- Problem-Solving & Creativity: Proactive approach to design challenges, iteration, and innovation.
- Experience working with VA, federal agencies, or government digital services.
- Familiarity with VA.gov development guidelines, U.S. Web Design System (USWDS), and Digital Services Playbook.
- Experience designing for mobile-first, cloud-based, or API-driven platforms.
