Job Summary
This position reports to the dean of IU's Media School and directly supervises the director of content, the director of engineering and operations, the news bureau chief, and the director of student media. This leader identifies, cultivates, and activates partnerships, initiatives, distribution channels, and other opportunities that respond to, or set, new industry standards. Strategic decisions will be driven by IU 2030: The Indiana University Strategic Plan with particular attention paid to the section on "Service to Our State and Beyond," and The Media School's 2025-2030 Strategic Plan. Department-Specific Responsibilities
Oversees all aspects of our award-winning public media organization, setting the strategic direction for radio, television, and digital content while ensuring alignment with the university and school's missions. Provides vision, leadership, and operational oversight in these areas:
Public Media content creation and programming, including news, public affairs, arts and culture, and education for WTIU Public Television and WFIU Public Radio. Professional Media Production Services. Student Media Integration and Student Training. Community Outreach and Education Services. Membership, Major Giving, and Corporate Development. Operations and Engineering. Business and Administration.
Strategic Leadership and Vision
Navigates the dynamic media landscape, crafting innovative and adaptive strategies that respond to industry shifts and emerging trends. Works with the associate dean of undergraduate education to develop responsive and leading-edge educational opportunities for students in public media, news, broadcast, and productions as appropriate for The Media School's curriculum. Leads a $9 million plus budget, ensuring financial sustainability and identifying new revenue opportunities. Manages and supports an experienced team of 65 plus full-time staff, in addition to part-time professional and student staff. Inspires innovation at all levels, cultivating a workplace that values creativity and excellence, embracing the reexamination of traditional models, and setting new industry standards. Works with the director of student media to create shared opportunities for student training, content partnerships, and business initiatives.
Industry and External Partnerships
Engages as the primary liaison with PBS, NPR, CPB, NETA, APT, and other key public media organizations. Collaborates with public broadcasting stations across Indiana and nationally to amplify the impact of public media. Develops and implements targeted partnerships, reaching beyond the standard model, to achieve strategic goals.
Fundraising and Revenue Growth
Expands philanthropic giving, including major gifts, membership, corporate sponsorships, and grants. Develops innovative strategies to diversify revenue streams and sustain public media operations.
Regulatory and Compliance Oversight
Ensures adherence to FCC regulations, CPB grant requirements, and university policies. Works with university legal counsel and administration on key compliance matters.
Community Engagement and Public Presence
Serves as the public face of WFIU/WTIU, fostering relationships with listeners, viewers, donors, and stakeholders. Engages with the community to strengthen support for local journalism, arts, and educational programming. Ensures the news outlets adhere to the highest standards of journalistic ethics, fostering a culture of integrity, transparency, and accountability in all content creation and reporting.
General Responsibilities Directs overall operations and strategy for the radio and television broadcasting function of the university, including divisions of educational services, public television station WTIU, public radio station WFIU, membership and development, the public website, operations, engineering, and the business office. Hires, trains, evaluates, coaches, resolves complex employment matters, assigns work, sets goals and objectives, determines staffing needs, sets strategic priorities, and directs the work of people leaders within the broadcasting and production area. Develops and implements new processes, standards, policies, and revenue-generating strategies that impact broadcasting and production, while remaining compliant with FCC and other applicable regulations. Directs and manages the budget, including expenditures and revenue projections, program costs, cost containment, capital needs, corporate development goals, contract negotiations, and report filing. Researches industry trends, technologies, and best practices, explores broader production offerings, and implements strategy to achieve long-term broadcasting and production goals. Serves as a liaison and ambassador for university broadcasting and production efforts to external constituent groups, including listeners, university stakeholders, professional organizations, businesses, and state and national networks, stations, and associations. Develops and maintains relationships with university stakeholders; ensures objectives fulfill the academic mission of the university. Determines content needs, frequently in collaboration with other broadcasting and production organizations, that appropriately deliver local, state-wide, and national coverage of relevant topics. Oversees process for resolving human resources and operational issues.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
