About the job
The Indy is seeking a seasoned editor passionate about telling great stories to help expand the editorial capacity at Nevada’s premier nonprofit newsroom, ensuring excellence in day-to-day reporting and assisting editors and reporters on high-impact accountability journalism projects. Working under the co-editors and managing editor, the deputy managing editor collaborates with team members to expand our audience and more deeply engage readers, build a talent pipeline through our internship program and elevate our work with thoughtful edits across all platforms. The ideal candidate is a team player eager to help bring our publication to the next level and energized by our mission of “illuminating the state’s most pressing issues, fostering insightful conversations and holding those in power to account.”
Core responsibilities:
I. Editing
- Edit news stories: Help ensure clarity, reader friendliness, factual accuracy and compliance with AP style in all content.
- Lead The Indy’s opinion division: Curate and edit 4-6 opinion columns and reader-submitted pieces weekly, enforcing The Indy’s strict quality and accuracy standards. Help recruit a diverse slate of contributors and solicit timely and relevant reader submissions to create a vibrant marketplace of ideas.
- Cultivate content-sharing partnerships: Assist with curating and localizing pieces from our partner journalism organizations, including The 19th and The Associated Press.
II. Audience engagement
- Make our daily newsletter (The Daily Indy) a must-read: Own end-to-end production of our flagship newsletter that runs six days a week — curating stories, writing engaging messages to readers and ensuring it’s in reader inboxes by 8 a.m. Implement strategies to grow newsletter readership.
- Connect with more readers: In tandem with the social media producer, increase The Indy’s reach via creative, data-driven audience and social media strategies (e.g., SEO headlines, interactive formats).
III. Team support
- Develop the next generation of journalists: Recruit and manage 1-2 interns at a time in alignment with The Indy’s hands-on mentoring approach. Coordinate assignments with the editorial team to integrate interns’ work into broader coverage plans and build interns’ skill to cultivate a strong pipeline of talent.
- Maintain continuity in editing: Help fill gaps during other editors’ vacations/breaks, ensuring a smooth editing workflow year-round.
IV. Strategic initiatives
- Build accountability reporting pipeline: Collaborate with editors to shift more resources toward more sophisticated accountability and investigative projects.
- Connect with the community: Represent The Indy at events, sourcing story leads and expanding reader relationships.
Qualifications:
Required Experience:
- Minimum five years in news editing, including two or more years supervising writers and/or interns.
- Mastery of AP style, social media analytics, and CMS tools (WordPress, MailChimp)
- Demonstrated success in newsletter production and audience growth.
Preferred Skills:
- Deep knowledge of Nevada politics/culture (e.g., familiarity with key issues such as film tax credits, education reform).
- Experience in nonprofit/newsroom financials (e.g., grant tracking, donor relations)
- Health: Premium-free medical/dental/vision insurance.
- Retirement: 401(k) with 50 percent employer match of the first 7 percent of salary contributed
- Time Off: 15 days PTO to start + 12 paid holidays.
- Tech: $25 biweekly cell phone stipend.
- Development: Funding for industry conferences (e.g., AJP events).
- Salary range: $80,000-$90,000/year
