Position Overview:
We are seeking an enthusiastic, adaptable, and experienced Music Teacher to join our team for a maternity leave coverage position. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching music to students from JK through Grade 6, following the established curriculum and lesson plans left by the full-time music teacher, as well as designing and delivering some original lessons. This role requires creativity, flexibility, and the ability to engage students with a variety of musical concepts and activities, fostering a love for music while maintaining a supportive learning environment.
Responsibilities:
- Curriculum & Instruction:
- Follow the music curriculum and lesson plans provided by the full-time music teacher to ensure continuity of instruction.
- Design and implement additional music lessons where necessary, creating engaging and age-appropriate content for JK-Grade 6 students.
- Teach students fundamental music concepts, including rhythm, melody, music theory, vocal development, instrument playing, and music appreciation.
- Encourage creativity and exploration by incorporating a variety of teaching methods and tools, such as games, songs, and interactive activities.
- Maintain a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment that fosters student participation and self-expression.
- Set clear expectations for behavior and encourage collaboration, teamwork, and respect among students during musical activities.
- Foster an atmosphere where all students feel comfortable and excited to engage with music.
- Monitor students' progress through informal assessments (e.g., class participation, performances, projects) to provide feedback and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Offer constructive feedback to students to help them develop their musical skills and confidence.
- Maintain records of students' participation and progress, providing updates to parents and caregivers as needed.
- Assist with the planning, preparation, and execution of school-wide music performances, concerts, and recitals.
- Support students in rehearsals and provide opportunities for them to showcase their musical talents, either individually or in groups.
- Collaborate with other faculty members to ensure that students are prepared for performances and musical events.
- Work closely with other teachers to integrate music into the broader curriculum where possible.
- Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers regarding student progress, upcoming performances, and any specific needs or concerns.
- Collaborate with the full-time music teacher and other staff to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of the music program during the maternity leave period.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Music Performance, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Proven experience teaching music to young children, preferably in a school setting.
- Strong proficiency in music theory, voice, and/or various instruments (piano, guitar, etc.).
- Ability to engage and inspire students in grades JK through 6 with enthusiasm, patience, and creativity.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate with colleagues and interact effectively with students and parents.
- Flexibility to follow existing lesson plans while also creating new and engaging music lessons.
- Passion for teaching music and fostering a love for the arts in young learners.
