The City of Santa Clarita is currently recruiting multiple part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) Library Aide I and Library Aide IIs in the Public Library division of the Human Resources and Library Services department. These positions assist in providing library patrons with a variety of public library programs and services. This position may work up to 19 hours per week for a Library Aide I and up to 27 hours per week for a Library Aide II. Branch placement and schedules are developed based on the needs of each library branch. This position requires the ability to work evenings and weekends, shifts vary Monday – Sunday from 8:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.
PTS Library Aide I $18.06 - $19.16 per hour Duties and Responsibilities
- Shelves library materials in proper order and location; sorts and maintains books on shelves, unpacks boxes, assists with processing of materials, and sorting of donations
- Maintains the overall clean and professional environment of the library with shelf reading and blocking of collections
- Processes incoming materials, including books, CDs, and DVDs, through transit, bins, and book drop, and correctly sorts items from bin to cart. Inspects items for damage.
- Assists with the organization, set-up, and clean-up of library facilities for library special programs; gathers needed supplies for programs, monitors larger-scale programs, and directs customers to appropriate program locations
- Identifies and processes lists of items missing, claims returned, in transit, and hold requests
- Provides customer service, including greeting customers and answering basic inquiries regarding library hours, general location of library resources, and routine information about programs and services
- Routes incoming phone calls to the appropriate staff or area
- Addresses issues and concerns with patrons as they arise
- Assists in the opening and closing of the library
- Performs related duties as directed by a Library Assistant, Librarian, Circulation Supervisor, Senior Librarian, and/or Library Administrator Education and Experience
- High school diploma/ GED equivalent
- Bilingual in English/Spanish is highly desirable
- Experience working or volunteering in a library or similar environment is highly desirable
- Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary will be considered PTS Library Aide II $19.41 - $ 20.59 per hour Library Aide II includes all the responsibilities of the Library Aide I, in addition to the following: Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists patrons at the circulation desk and addresses issues and concerns with patrons as they arise; checks materials in and out; registers patrons and issues library cards; creates and maintains patron’s records; processes overdue library materials and resolves problems regarding fines and overdue, lost or damaged materials; claim returned items; receives and prepares receipts for money received; logs patrons using the computer terminal
- Assists patrons by locating books, finding reference materials utilizing online reference services, providing information regarding programs or general information, and answering simple reference questions
- Processes customer payments by accurately operating a cash drawer to handle money and preparing receipts for money received
- Assists with receiving, processing, and filing transited locker hold items, including basic troubleshooting; maintains items returned to the library that belong to other institutions
- Collects door count and enters data into tracking system; reconciles counting of money by acting as a second counter at cash drawer; cleans items on tables; closes blinds; turns on and off computers; operates digital signage; monitors doorways during closing procedures to ensure no customer enter the building and the remaining customers exit the building; resetting the library for the next day’s operations; and other operational duties as assigned.
- Acts as a liaison to full-time employees by referring the more difficult customer questions and concerns to full-time library employees to address and resolve
- Oversees the library building for short periods during regular staff meetings and trainings
- Maintains program calendar and site reservations
- Performs additional duties and projects as needed Education and Experience
- High school diploma/GED equivalent,
- Minimum of one year of experience providing customer service
- Bilingual in English/Spanish is highly desirable
- Experience working or volunteering in a library or similar environment is highly desirable
- Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary will be considered Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, basic library services, practices and terminology, library equipment and resources, including a personal computer, and common reference tools, and the ability to perform a variety of clerical and administrative functions in support of library operations.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques of proper public desk and phone etiquette; English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
- Strong customer service skills and the ability to work tactfully and professionally with customers at the front counter and on the phone
- Knowledge of basic computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, spreadsheets, and databases
- Strong work ethic and the ability to behave ethically and professionally, and exercise discretion and sound judgment
- Ability to learn the organization, operation, and services of the library and outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities
- Strong team player and the ability to work both independently and as part of a work group
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to handle challenging customer service situations in addition to establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
- Strong communication skills and the ability to provide instructions to customers on how to find library materials and operate computer equipment, both verbally and in writing
- Strong file management skills and the ability to develop and maintain accurate records and filing systems
- Ability to make sound decisions within established guidelines and be a creative problem solver
- Ability to observe safety principles and work in a safe manner
- Ability to work effectively with persons from diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
- Ability to lift, drag, and push book crates and boxes weighing up to 25 pounds
- The ability to be self-motivated and to work both independently and as part of a cohesive work team
- Knowledge of library operations related to circulation and the ability to effectively answer general library reference questions of customers
- Strong fiscal management skills and the ability to accurately operate a till drawer and perform money handling functions
