Overview
An employee in this position coordinates and leads community engagement and county-wide outreach services by effectively managing and maintaining the mobile library. Work includes developing and updating a plan for effective outreach based on community needs. This employee actively serves as part of the Library Management Team. Work is performed under general supervision of the Library Director and is reviewed through daily observation and conferences and is evaluated based on meeting established goals.
Works in close cooperation with the Library Director and the Library Management Team to develop an annual plan, including a budget, for library outreach programs and services.
Serves as library ambassador and community liaison by sharing information about library services and programs and actively developing partnerships with community groups and organizations.
Oversees the mobile library schedule, partnering with staff from all library locations to provide programs and services that effectively meet community needs.
Locates and schedules events, program locations, and community stops with a focus on bringing library services to the underserved in our community. Effectively markets to assure success.
Provides customer service and access to equipment and resources made available by the mobile library.
Maintains a neat, orderly, and clean bookmobile that is appealing to mobile library users; assures routine maintenance and fueling of the bookmobile.
Develops and maintains a collection of materials that are appealing to diverse populations and anticipates community need. Collaborates with the adult and youth librarians by making suggestions for the library-wide collection based on community knowledge.
Plans and implements engaging programs that extend library services outside of the physical branches.
Provides circulation activities and related services at a fixed library location as needed.
Schedules and supervises part-time library assistants that provide outreach support.
Additional Job Duties
Maintains the Library Department’s storywalks by changing out the panels if needed. Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Understanding of library procedures, methods, materials, and practices. General knowledge of computers and other library equipment. Excellent technology skills. Thorough knowledge of the circulation, readers’ advisory, and reference services; working knowledge of books and authors and collection development principles. General knowledge of the theory and objectives of a public library system. Skill in the safe operation of a large motor vehicle throughout the County. Ability to work independently and to develop plans and implement a schedule of program operations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens of all ages. An ability to communicate effectively both in oral and written forms and to establish and maintain working relationships with others. Ability to learn an automated system, cataloging and other library procedures and implement procedures with a minimum of errors.
Master’s degree in library science from an accredited ALA school and some library experience are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Spanish language skills are preferred. Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire. Must obtain certification as a NC Public Librarian from the NC State Library and complete Defensive Driving training within one year of employment. Willingness and ability to flex 40-hour week across days, evenings, and weekends as needed to cover community needs and events.
