DESCRIPTION
THE AGENCY The Alameda County Library provides library services from ten libraries in the cities of Albany, Dublin, Fremont, Newark and Union City and the unincorporated communities of Castro Valley and San Lorenzo. Additional services are provided through Mobile and Outreach Services, Education and Literacy Services, and Social Justice Services. The County Library was established in 1910 and is governed by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. The Alameda County Library Advisory Commission advises County Librarian and the Board of Supervisors on library services. The County Library is funded primarily by local property taxes, with additional revenue from State grants and contracts with cities for additional open hours and services. The Board of Supervisors allocates a portion of a utility users and business license tax which is collected only in the unincorporated areas of the County to the Library for service to the unincorporated areas. The Alameda County Library Foundation and active Friends of the Library or Library League groups in each community support library programs and services. THE POSITION This flexibly staffed classification series specification describes the entry-level classification in the Library Clerk series. Under supervision, provides customer service and performs various clerical and related duties in the Alameda County Library (Library). This is the entry-level classification in the Library Clerk flex series located in the Library. The employees work exclusively in the Library, providing customer service and performing more varied and complex clerical tasks under close supervision from a supervisor or manager. Employees in the Library Clerk I classification are expected to learn the job and develop the necessary knowledge and abilities for progression to flexibly promote to the higher classification of Library Clerk II after the completion of 975 hours (equivalent to six (6) months of full-time experience). VACANCY There are immediate full-time and part-time vacancies at all Alameda County Library locations. These include Albany, Dublin, Fremont, Newark, and Union City, as well as the unincorporated cities of Castro Valley and San Lorenzo.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum professional requirements for admission to the competitive assessment process include:
- EITHER I Experience: The equivalent of six (6) months of full-time experience as a Library Page in the Alameda County classified service.
- OR II Experience: The equivalent of six (6) months of full-time experience in clerical or customer service work.
Special Requirement: Push carts of heavy books and lift up to 35 lbs. Employees in this classification may be required to work evenings and weekends. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

- Learn library procedures, including checkout of materials, registration of members, processing of materials and supplies.

- Learn to sort and shelve library materials accurately.
- Follow written and oral instructions.
- Type accurately.
- Use the common functions of a computer in an office environment.
- Problem-solve.
- Exercise interpersonal sensitivity while working with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
EXAMINATION COMPONENTS
THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS: Review of applicants' application and supplemental questionnaire to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process. A written exam component that will be weighted as pass/fail. An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidates' final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises. Candidates must attain a qualifying rating on each portion of this recruitment. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE CHANGES TO THE ANNOUNCED EXAMINATION STEPS.
