The Roseland Free Public Library is seeking a thoughtful, organized, and service-oriented individual to lead library services as Director.
Roseland Free Public Library is a warm and welcoming space in the heart of our borough. We are seeking a community-focused library Director who will actively engage with the public, keep an organized administrative approach and be responsive to the evolving needs of our over 6,000-strong community. With the support of a forward-leaning Library Board, our next Director will be empowered to provide an innovative and responsive approach to the library’s services and space.
Our ideal candidate is dynamic and outgoing, ready to be an active member of the community, and willing to work closely with Roseland town officials and local organizations. As our library Director, you will embrace the vision and mission of the library, practice responsible record keeping and fiscal management, and support staff to continue their outstanding services that the library is known for, through programming and everyday engagement.
Essential Job Functions:
- Prepares various reports like state aid report, directors reports, evaluations, budget, capital plan, and staff schedules.
- Collaborates with the Board of Trustees in the development, review, and implementation of library policies.
- Reviews and approves payroll.
- Fills in at public service desks as required.
- Participates in the screening of applicants for vacancies.
- Supervises community use of library space.
- Represents the library at relevant local, county, and statewide meetings.
- Supervises and supports staff in the execution of their responsibilities.
- Provides responsive feedback regularly and evaluates staff bi-yearly.
- Develops and strengthens community partnerships.
- Upholds a high standard of library service.
- Supervises all library functions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Desire to meet and serve the library’s user community.
- Willingness and ability to problem-solve on a regular basis.
- Ability to think analytically and to develop new or revised systems, procedures, and workflow.
- Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.
- Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form.
- Ability to make administrative decisions, interpret policies, and supervise staff.
- Ability to motivate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, volunteers, other community agencies, and members of the public.
- Knowledge of the philosophy and techniques of library service.
- Ability to organize job duties and work independently.
- Creativity to develop and implement library programs and services.
- Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, practices, methods and administration.
- Thorough knowledge of computer hardware and software programs.
- Knowledge of office and bookkeeping practices.
Requirements:
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited MLS (or equivalent) program.
- New Jersey Public Librarian Certificate, or eligibility to acquire.
- A minimum of five years of experience as a professional librarian.
- Management experience is preferred.
- Director’s experience is preferred, but not required.
- Demonstrated leadership experience and interest in professional development through attending workshops and conferences.
Schedule:
- Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.
- Attendance at evening meetings may be required, including monthly Board of Trustees meetings.
Compensation and Benefits:
- This is a full-time position with a minimum salary of $85,000 (salary negotiable based upon experience).
- Benefits include paid holidays, paid vacation, paid sick leave, optional medical, dental, and vision coverage, and membership in the NJ Public Employee Retirement System (PERS).

About Our Library:
The Roseland Free Public Library enjoys strong support from a community and borough leadership that values their local library. We have an annual budget of approximately $600,000; and a dedicated staff that includes three full-time and seven part-time employees.
Our active Friends group has recently provided space refurbishment, mobile hotspots, and museum passes for lending.
The Roseland Free Public Library is a member of BCCLS (the Bergen County Cooperative Library System), which includes 77 libraries in northern New Jersey and circulates over twelve million items annually. As a member of the library, our staff has access to professional development and the support of a large community of library professionals.
Located at the western edge of Essex County, the borough of Roseland was ranked as the 14th best place to live in New Jersey in the 2019 rankings in New Jersey Monthly. We also benefit from proximity to larger townships in both Essex and Morris counties.
