Description
We are looking for a full-time Library Assistant to be responsible for various library functions and clerical duties within the Youth Services Department. This individual will work independently and collaboratively with other departmental staff as needed in preparing for youth programs, creating bibliographies and displays, and assisting with collection development tasks. They will also work to fulfill the needs of patrons, help in answering directional questions and possibly be responsible for the preparation and presentation of story time programs and other youth programs as assigned. Flexibility to work nights and weekends will be required. Duties performed:
Assists patrons by:
Answering directional and procedural inquiries. Advising patrons concerning the library and its services, resources and policies. Giving instruction in the use of the on-line catalog and location of materials. Instructing in the operation of equipment. Answering reference and other information requests. Answering incoming calls; providing guidance and assistance, routing calls to appropriate personnel or department; taking messages. Assisting and instructing in use of public copiers. Assisting patrons with internet and word processing computers. Prepares/Presorts items for reshelving and shelves items in the assigned area and other areas as necessary. Assists in changes of daily work schedule due to unexpected public demands. May have one or more of the following duties assigned:
Creates and proofreads weekly/monthly schedules and posts them within the department and to the library's shared digital platforms. Performs various duties in the servicing/maintenance of materials by: Entering data into the library's cataloging database Tracking materials sent to Technical Services Assisting with maintenance and evaluation of the youth collections Maintaining periodicals and conducting inventories. Performing minor repairs to books, magazines and videos. Plans, prepares and conducts a regular schedule of story time or other youth programs as assigned (including travel to Branches to present story time and other youth programs as needed). Recommends to the Children's Librarians, the purchase of materials including materials and supplies for programming. Maintains public and staff work areas, including story time areas. Maintains statistical information regarding program attendance and other reports on a regular basis. Maintains office equipment including providing paper for copiers and printers as needed. Operates and drives Library vehicles in a safe manner. Takes applications for library cards during outreach programs. Maintains confidential patron records and preserves confidentiality of said records. Cross trains to provide backup for other positions as required. May fill in other positions within the library system. Conducts tours of Main Library for visiting groups. May be required to work nights and weekends. Performs other related duties as required. Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent. One (1) year of library work experience in the Children's Department, preferred. Excellent computer skills, including keyboarding and internet experience; ability to perform detailed and precise work. Ability to adhere to library policies and procedures; ability to set priorities and manage workloads. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and all library employees; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to work in a team environment as well as independent work. Ability to adjust to changes in the daily work schedule; ability to handle multiple projects at the same time. Ability to alphabetize and learn Dewey Decimal system, automated circulation system and library circulation policies and procedures. Must possess a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one and maintains a safe driving record.
Salary Description
$25,000-$28,000
