Job Description
SUMMARY:
The Communication Specialist executes comprehensive communication plans and a variety of communication-related projects and initiatives. This role serves all stakeholders as it deploys internal and external communication. This position is a valuable member of the marketing department and has a significant impact on information, consumption, engagement, reputation, and branding.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Manages and oversees internal Intranet (SharePoint-based) content, format, functionality, search tools, etc., as well as reporting of metrics.
- Plans, writes, and edits content for a variety of internal communications mediums, such as the credit union Intranet, emails, huddle boards, scripts, FAQs, forms, training material, procedures, newsletters, and more.
- Executes external communication, which may include quarterly member newsletters, statement messages, press releases, media advisories, advertorials, financial literacy documents, proposal requests, notices, blogs, vlogs, podcasts, and more.
- Serves as a key member of the Kindness Committee and ensures the story of credit union community involvement is told.
- Supports brand standards and works to ensure application across all channels of communication.
- Evaluates communication tools and makes recommendations for improvements.
- Partners with leaders across the organization to develop content, manage reputation, coordinate tactics, and ensure communication needs are met.
- Understands how communication creates value for the organization through its ability to craft the right messages for the right audiences to achieve the right outcomes. Understands credit union stakeholders appropriately in order to deliver timely and relevant messages.
- Participates in credit union committee and department meetings as needed and disseminates key points via internal communication channels or Intranet.
- Works with leadership to develop and disseminate important messages to team members.
- Assists with media and communication efforts during emergency situations as needed.
- Fosters positive corporate branding in all communication.

Understands the complexities of financial institution operations, products, and services. Exhibits exemplary communication skills such as writing, public speaking, and networking; and is comfortable in group settings.
The ability to motivate or influence others is a material part of the job, requiring a significant level of diplomacy and trust. Obtaining cooperation (internally and/or externally) is an important part of the job.
Maximizes effective use of time; effectively prioritizes activities. Must be highly motivated, independent, creative with good follow-up skills, energetic, and be a self-starter.
Represents the credit union in a professional manner at all times. Builds and maintains a network of key contacts and effectively utilizes the network to help accomplish goals.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

- Must have a thorough understanding of financial institution operations, preferably through previous positions within a credit union or community bank.
- Exemplary composition and proofreading skills are a must.
- Strong attention to detail is a requirement.
- Must possess strong digital and information technology skills.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from large groups of individuals.
- Maintains the skills necessary to perform successfully in this position, including technical analysis, creativity, time management, organizational skills, and communication theory.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Four-year college degree in communication or any related information science field and 3+ years practical experience in corporate communication at a financial institution; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Exemplary composition skills are required. Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Above-average ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to conduct instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Must be versed on financial institution operations, products, and services and be able to describe them in some detail. Must be aware of how a credit union operates, its policies regarding savings, lending, and checking account usage. Needs to have a level of knowledge and understanding sufficient to communicate effectively to both internal and external stakeholders.
The employee must be digitally and technologically proficient, able to manage credit union Intranet and other communication platforms. The employee must be able to perform basic core functions on the credit union's computer system. The employee will need to know how to operate a personal computer with such software functions as spreadsheet, word processing, and database management.
