Over 100 different events by a mix of classical, rock, pop, jazz, R&B, indie, and country performers make up a typical summer season on our two open-air and two indoor stages. Each year the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is featured in six weeks of concerts, many with Chief Conductor Marin Alsop. During the same summer months, the Ravinia Steans Music Institute provides young professional classical and jazz musicians with career-advancing training and concert settings. Offstage and year-round, Ravinia’s Reach Teach Play education programs engage 75,000 children and adults—in schools with little to no music curriculum, in our Chicagoland communities, and at our 36-acre park—in our mission to make music equitably accessible to all.

Job Description

The Violin Instructor will teach multiple levels of beginning group violin lessons and develop student musicianship through an enriching curriculum. The ideal candidate will understand and support our belief that every student can succeed in music with access to high quality music instruction and support from their teacher, family, and community. The Violin Instructor will be part of a team of instructors that will inspire all participating students and be responsible for maintaining a standard of excellence for the Ravinia Lawndale Family Music School. This is a contract position that averages 2-4 hours per week, reports to the Program Manager, and is paid an hourly rate. The Family Music School is in session during the school year and 5-6 weeks during the summer.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Teach group violin lessons in-person
• Flexibility in the classroom environment to adapt to student and program needs
• Design and submit a curriculum plan each term that will foster student development
• Showcase violin studio in recitals and performances in the community
• Cultivate a community environment that contributes to the well-being of every student.
• Help create and implement shared ideals, an innovative curriculum, and pedagogy that supports each student holistically and honors each student's voice and choice.
• Active participation in faculty meetings, student/parent meetings and family field trips
• Assess student progress (musical literacy, proficiency and appreciation) on an ongoing basis
  
  

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• Ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students
• Superior interpersonal skills needed to collaborate with parents, students, administrators, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds
• Proven ability to be flexible and open to new pedagogical approaches
• Comfortable working in an independent work environment
  
  

Education and Experience

• Strong background in beginning violin pedagogy and music education with experience teaching beginners - intermediate students and teaching in a group setting
• Experience and desire to work with children and adults from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds
• Bachelor’s degree or related work experience
  
  

Additional information

Work Environment

• Working Saturday mornings to early afternoons at participating Lawndale park locations (Piotrowski Park, Homan Square Park, Douglass Park, and Franklin Park)
• Interaction with young students, parents and administrators where the safety of the students is paramount
• Travel to Ravinia is required occasionally for recitals and field trips (usually twice per year)
  
  

About The Program

A long-standing Reach Teach Play program, the Ravinia Lawndale Family Music School brings families together in the Lawndale community around musical experiences. The Family Music School provides access to the arts and opportunities for cultural enrichment, to this underrepresented west-side community, through high-quality music instruction and performances. The Family Music School offers free weekly group music classes in guitar, piano, preparatory, violin and voice at four Chicago Park District sites for over 130 children and adults who reside in the Lawndale neighborhood.
