About the opportunity: KTVB, the TEGNA-owned NBC affiliate in beautiful Boise, Idaho, is searching for a motivated and people-oriented leader to serve as Assistant News Director.

Our ideal candidate is a dynamic, seasoned leader who excels at managing multiple projects while mentoring and developing journalists. This role requires hands-on guidance to enhance KTVB’s editorial judgment, storytelling, and content presentation.
They must demonstrate strong people management skills with the ability to inspire, motivate, collaborate, and own the big story.
At KTVB we are passionate about providing the very best news coverage across all platforms, ensuring the content reflects the diverse communities we serve. The Assistant News Director will lead day-to-day decision-making on broadcast coverage and assist in coordinating news coverage on all station platforms, with an increased focus on digital.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the assignment desk on daily editorial development, adhering to KTVB’s brand and gold standard of excellence.
- Work with producers, reporters, anchors, digital producers, and photographers on compelling, impact-driven original storytelling.
- Quick decision-making, leading the news team during breaking news and severe weather.
- Ensure a multi-platform approach in every stage of the news-gathering and reporting process.
- Read scripts, providing constructive feedback and writing coaching daily.
- Set daily news-gathering expectations, provide strong mentorship, and support career development for the team.
- Collaborate with station leaders to execute long-term newsroom and station strategies.
- Strategize with the executive team on goals focused on growing our people, our content, and our audience.
- Evaluate and recruit potential team members.
- Oversee schedules for various newsroom employees.
- Evaluate workflow efficiencies and adjust processes as necessary.
- Participate in nightside and weekend manager on-call rotation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field and news leadership experience.
- 5+ years industry experience, with original content creation and leadership experience preferred.
- Solid foundation of journalistic and content judgment, emphasizing accurate, fair and ethical decision-making and unique local content with a community engagement focus.
- Strong communication and conflict management skills.
- Strong organizational skills in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
- Passion for growing journalists and fostering a creative, positive newsroom environment.
