Overview: The general function and responsibility of this full-time professional position is to provide state-of-the-art expertise in substance use and tobacco prevention, health promotion, outreach and education activities of the Tobacco and Substance Use prevention grants. All prevention grants are working toward decreasing substance mis/use and tobacco use among youth and adults; and building collaboration between community entities. The Coordinator will report directly to the Health Promotion Manager. This position will be required to keep detailed records for reporting and evaluation. The candidate will work independently, be well-organized, and possess a strong attention to detail. Travel is required throughout the Western Public Health District and occasionally to statewide trainings in a central location. A minimum Provisional Prevention Specialist Certification or willingness to obtain certification required.
Regulatory Requirements:Experience in health education preferred. Experience preferred in: community organizing, cultural competency, working with multicultural individuals and organizations, and health education. The successful candidate must be able to work independently, objectively analyze programs and problem solve. The following skills are also needed: excellent written and verbal communication, strong interpersonal skills, computer skills, group-facilitation, and ability to pay close attention to detail. Ability to speak multiple languages required.
Responsibilities:
Ensure the implementation of all substance use and tobacco prevention activities as outlined in specific grants.
Conduct outreach and training activities with community partners as outlined in the grant work plans.
Provide information dissemination interventions to the general public and specific impacted populations to increase awareness and knowledge of the risk of substance use and their effects on individuals, families and communities across the Western Public Health District.
Support and expand the identified environmental strategies to establish or change community conditions, standards, and norms in order to influence the incidence and prevalence of substance misuse in the Western Public Health District.
Provide education to specific impacted populations to increase awareness and knowledge of the risk of substance use and their effects on individuals, families and communities across the Western Public Health District.
Implement evidence-based or evidence informed programs and strategies in an effort to prevent negative health outcomes associated with tobacco use and exposure among Youth, Young Adults, and adults
Develop and/or engage with multi-level, multi-sector local coalitions and stakeholders to plan and implement strategies that prevent the initiation of tobacco use, eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke, and promote successful quit attempts among Youth and adults with tobacco-related health disparities.
Maintain positive working relationships with local agencies (including hospitals and other health care and social service organizations), municipal governments, schools, law enforcement, businesses and other work sites, civic and community groups, media, parents, youth and other community members. Network on local and state level.
Serve as a positive spokesperson for the projects.
Attend required trainings and meetings, both in-person and online, in accordance with grant funding.
Complete reporting and evaluation processes as set by specific funders
Perform other duties as assigned by the Health Promotion Manager and/or the Executive Director of Healthy Androscoggin.
