About the Department of Communication Studies
The department offers contemporary courses and flexible degree programs designed to meet students' schedules. It focuses on developing communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and analytical skills applicable in real-world contexts. Students can participate in MSU Denver Debate, which has gained recognition and offers international exchange opportunities, or join Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association's honor society, to enhance networking and professional growth.
The department comprises 13 full-time faculty, approximately 40 affiliate faculty, and around 250 majors. Its staff includes a Program Assistant and academic advisors shared with other departments.
Position Summary
MSU Denver invites applications for a full-time Lecturer of Communication Studies to coordinate oral communication courses (COMM 1010 Presentational Speaking and COMM 1100 Fundamentals of Oral Communication). The position begins Fall 2025 and involves a 12-month contract, with a reduced teaching load (4:4) during the academic year and summer responsibilities related to course administration.
The ideal candidate should be adept at designing and assessing online and in-person courses that foster active engagement, with a critical approach to public speaking pedagogy, including nonwestern epistemologies, colonial critique, or Spanish-English communication. The role also involves liaising with other units concerning general studies courses and demonstrating the ability to teach courses fulfilling general studies requirements.
Responsibilities
- Teaching 24 credits annually (4:4)
- Coordinating functions of COMM 1010/1100 courses
- Supporting assessment and maintenance projects for these courses
Required Qualifications
Master's degree in Communication Studies, Communication, Speech Communication, or a closely related field
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching various delivery modes, including online asynchronous, hybrid synchronous, and HyFlex courses, with proficiency in Canvas LMS and online public speaking platforms (e.g., GoReact)
- Experience working with diverse urban student populations, including students of color, LGBTQ+ students, first-generation students, students with disabilities, nontraditional students, veterans, and English language learners
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

Salary and Benefits
This is a 12-month position with a 9-month faculty contract and 3 months of summer work at 0.66 FTE. The salary range is $50,000 - $60,000, with additional compensation possible for summer teaching or administrative duties.
