General Summary:
Under general supervision, instructs students in the elements and fundamentals of music. Works to develop students' talents and abilities in areas such as singing, playing instruments, listening to and reading music, and acquiring an appreciation of music.
Essential Functions:
Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One. Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with students, parents, administrators, peers, and all other stakeholders. Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive learning environment for all students; supervises students in classroom activities and in other areas as assigned; maintains positive behavior support and classroom management systems. Demonstrates a variety of 21st century teaching skills to foster independent, creative, critical thinkers and problem solvers. Designs and facilitates engaging, high level, sophisticated learning experiences and applications. Teaches concepts and skills in the elements of music; analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal music, rhythms and fundamentals. Provides instruction by which students develop personal understanding of music concepts and talents, as well as an appreciation for their own efforts and the talents and efforts of others. Organizes classrooms and other settings for daily instruction. Selects, requests, and maintains an inventory of instructional aides, instruments, music equipment, technology tools, and supplies needed for daily activities; provides for safe storage and proper use of all materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse and minimize time required for distribution and collection. Directs and evaluates the basic learning and social experiences of pupils in all assigned school-sponsored activities. Demonstrates and evaluates the effectiveness of both formative and summative assessments; monitors student progression in classwork and assists students with all phases of the music class; observes student work to make constructive criticisms and corrections; evaluates contributions in group ensembles and projects. Implements state music standards. Collaborates with school and district personnel to evaluate effectiveness of curriculum and make suggestions for improvement. Networks with school personnel regarding scheduling issues. Prepares various records and forms such as lesson plans, daily and weekly activity plans, assessments, material requisitions, discipline reports, etc. Effectively uses personal computing devices and software applications for the management of student records, instructional efficiency, and professional development. Meets with parents, administrators and school counselors as needed to discuss student performance, social and emotional needs, behavior, and personal and academic goals and expectations, etc.; issues reports in accordance with school board policy to inform parents/guardians of students' progress; suggests interventions as appropriate. Participates in all professional meetings and training sessions as required. Effectively uses personal technology devices and software applications for the management of pertinent information and communication. Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Education/Work Experience:
Bachelor's degree in music education with previous student teaching experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Valid South Carolina teaching certification
Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district that pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of school policies, procedures, and operations. Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies used in daily activities. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and to complete work without the need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Ability to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, students, and the general public.
Working Conditions:
Duties are performed in a classroom setting with no significant exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Physical demands are restricted to work requiring occasional lifting/moving of items up to twenty-five pounds. Occasional travel is required; no overnight travel required.
Responsibility:
Responsible for supervision of students in classroom, field study and other instructional settings. Responsible for classroom materials and supplies budget (if applicable). Responsible for maintenance and inventory of equipment; responsible for reporting equipment malfunctions and safety issues.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school board's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
