The NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research is committed to creating new knowledge about the root causes of poverty, developing evidence-based interventions to address its consequences, and rapidly translating research findings into action through policy and best practices.
The AI Hub is inviting proposals for a consulting agreement for a a creative and user-centered UI/UX Designer to support the design of a cutting-edge application for suicide prevention. The AI Hub at McSilver has been established to investigate how artificial intelligence-driven systems can equitably address poverty and challenges relating to race and public health and provide thought leadership on the implications. At the AI Hub, we are developing software applications to enable more efficient, equitable, and accessible data analysis and insights for public health research and policy. We have a collaborative team of developers, data scientists, and public health researchers dedicated to leveraging technology and AI/ML for positive impact through public health solutions that better serve underrepresented and marginalized groups.
Reporting to the Assistant Director for Research and collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and developers, you will support efforts in designing an intuitive, engaging, and accessible user interface and experience. You will work directly with our Development Team to create designs that align with our mission's sensitive and impactful nature.
What you’ll work on:
Suicide Risk Dashboard Initiative : A tool for making data science and machine learning more accessible for suicide prevention research and policy.
Key skills and experience:
Proven experience in UI/UX application design, with a strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in prototyping and visual design, especially using tools such as Figma.
Familiarity with designing for applications integrated with AI/ML component.
Strong understanding of user-centered design principles, usability testing, and accessibility standards.
Knowledge of responsive design principles and best practices for designing interfaces that scale across devices.
Ability to gather and translate complex product requirements into intuitive and technically-feasible designs.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, agile environment.
Key responsibilities:
Collaborate with developers, data scientists, and public health experts to conceptualize and design a user-friendly application for suicide prevention.
Develop wireframes, prototypes, workflow diagrams, and high-fidelity mockups that align with project requirements and user feedback.
Design responsive and accessible user interfaces for new features and workflows.
Develop a cohesive design system with standardized, reusable components for engineering usage.
Facilitate cross-functional design reviews and usability testing and iterate based on feedback from stakeholders and users.
Translate user research into mockups and user flows using tools such as Figma to incorporate the needs and behaviors of target audiences, particularly underrepresented and marginalized groups.
Develop user acceptance test (UAT) scenarios to confirm and improve application performance.
Ensure all designs comply with accessibility standards, particularly WCAG guidelines, to promote inclusivity.
Stay updated on UI/UX trends and emerging technologies relevant to public health and AI-driven applications.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field, and two years of professional UI/UX design experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience designing products with AI/ML components
Interest in Experience/interest in working on projects in public health and/or Responsible AI/AI for Social Good
