The perks of working at Nelnet go beyond our benefits package. When you join the Nelnet team, you're part of a community invested in the success of each individual. That support comes through in our work, as we are united by our mission of creating opportunities for people where they live, learn, and work.
We are looking for a well-rounded user experience (UX) designer to join our team.
As a UX designer at Nelnet, you’ll craft intuitive, user-centered digital experiences by applying established design system patterns and identifying opportunities where new solutions are needed. You’ll collaborate across teams to solve real user problems—drawing on research insights, workflow analysis, and a deep understanding of system constraints. The ideal candidate combines creative thinking with strong technical awareness and problem-solving skills, translating complex requirements into clear, functional designs that scale.
Design intuitive, user-centered experiences using our established design system, ensuring consistency, scalability, and efficiency across products.
Identify when existing patterns meet user and business needs—and when a new pattern may be required. Collaborate with the design system team to propose enhancements or additions.
Translate complex problems into clear user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and design specifications that support both user goals and system constraints.
Partner with product owners and stakeholders to define design goals and translate requirements into impactful user experiences.
Collaborate closely with developers, UX leads, researchers, and content strategists to ensure accurate implementation and alignment with user needs.
Apply sound UX principles—interaction models, accessibility, usability heuristics—when designing within and around system-provided components.
Clearly communicate design rationale and present work to product teams, engineering partners, and business stakeholders for feedback and alignment.
US Citizenship and the ability to obtain a 5C Federal security clearance are required for this role.
