The SCA’s Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City’s 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects. Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion. Our three studios are comprised of talented architects and engineers who are driven to deliver high quality custom designed, sustainable, and resilient public schools. Managing Architect
who is responsible for the design, planning, implementation and oversight of major, complex and varied school building projects. Responsibilities include: Manages technical resources, guides interdisciplinary teams assigned to departmental projects. Ensures adherence to the schedule, budget, and standards. Participates in day-to-day operations to address and resolve specific managerial, operational, and administrative problems. Reviews and writes reports, approves expenditures, enforces rules, makes decisions about design-related services and materials. Participates in meetings on issues related to departmental and interdepartmental functions. Supervises architects and/or engineers and may act on behalf of the Studio Director. Manages efforts and documents regulatory approvals including zoning waiver, exhibits and city planning. In collaboration with the Design Studios, and external experts, researches new materials and products to align with agency and departmental goals. Fosters inter-studio communication and collaboration to review and discuss design requirements and other standards. Leads interagency efforts to improve/update/revise regulatory requirements related to school buildings. Attends meetings regarding technical standards, project needs, and lessons learned and develops resource documentation and training. Coordinates 'Lessons Learned' for new buildings and rehabilitation projects and obtains staff feedback. Manages the process of updating departmental policies and procedures. Assists the standards studio in implementing the Green School Guide (GSG). Minimum Qualifications: Baccalaureate Degree in Architecture A valid New York State license as a Registered Architect (RA). The license must be maintained for duration of employment; Eight years of full-time progressive experience as a Professional Architect, three years of which must have been as a project leader, project architect, or major project contributor or a satisfactory combination of education and experience. Salary dependent upon experience:
