Job Summary
The Senior Broadcast Engineer is responsible for maintaining and improving broadcast control room technology and providing technical support to a 24/7 video streaming and production facility. The role requires a highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated individual with excellent communication, engineering, and production skills. This position involves working closely with production and editorial staff to troubleshoot issues and enhance workflows, as well as proactively managing projects and system upgrades.
Responsibilities
- Ensure all technical aspects of the broadcast facility are operational, including troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of equipment, computers, and IP networks in a 24/7 environment.
- Diagnose and resolve audio/video system and IT problems quickly, providing alternative solutions to meet production deadlines.
- Contribute to the design, development, and deployment of complex broadcast video/audio and IT systems.
- Troubleshoot day-to-day production system issues such as Video Routers, Ross XPression Graphics, Ross Carbonite Switchers, Imagine Nexio servers, RTS intercoms, digital audio consoles, etc.
- Create processes and workflows to support control room staff and ensure smooth live broadcasts.
- Identify and implement improvements to on-air production capabilities and workflows.
- Foster a culture that enables staff to perform at their best.
- This role requires on-call shifts for emergency support, with occasional night or weekend work on projects.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in broadcast engineering and live video production, with proven troubleshooting skills.
- Proactive, flexible, and self-starting attitude, with the ability to learn new systems independently.
- Knowledge of all technical production areas, including studio equipment, broadcast systems, servers, networks, RF systems, editing, and playout software/hardware.
- Intermediate IT skills, including networking, IP configuration, and operating systems (Windows, Linux, Mac).
- Experience with newsroom systems like AP ENPS and related workflows is a plus.
- Experience with CAD system drawing is a plus.
- Ability to perform under pressure during live news situations.
- Strong communication skills to convey technical info clearly to non-technical staff.
- Ability to own tasks and see them through to completion.
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
