St. James Cathedral Diocese seeks a full-time Associate Music Director to serve the cathedral community. This position supports the Music Director by acting as principal organist for liturgies at the cathedral, assisting in the formation of choirs and cantors, and performing administrative duties. The Associate Music Director assists the Music Director in fostering a healthy music ministry that supports liturgical sung prayer and music that deepens faith.
Administrative responsibilities include:
- Scheduling musicians
- Assisting in the administration of the Music budget
Liturgical responsibilities include:
- Accompanying the choir Masses
- Acting as the primary organist for scheduled weekend Cathedral Masses
- Holy Days of Obligation
- Liturgical celebrations of the Easter Triduum
- Diocesan Liturgies held at the cathedral
- Liturgy for sacramental preparation and parish events
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Practice of the Catholic faith is required; a working understanding of the Roman Catholic liturgical theology and praxis is required, as well as a developing knowledge of the history and repertoire of sacred music.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Music, or its equivalent.
- Musical leadership skills in keyboard, voice, and conducting.
- Working knowledge of liturgical Spanish language and musical customs.
The working hours of this position are not limited to an 8-hour day. This person will need to be available in the evening and weekends, as needed.
The successful candidate will work cooperatively with various personalities within the Catholic Church and direct all projects with a focus on Christ.
