Position:Summer News Intern Status:Full-time for up to 12 weeks Start date:Flexible, but usually between May 19th and June 23rdSalary:$18/hr. Hours:Usually 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday Friday, but times and days can vary Location:Spokesman-Review building in Spokane, Washington About this role: Summer News Interns at The Spokesman-Reviewprovidea wide range of coverage as full-fledged members of the reporting staff.Our interns contribute to The Spokesman-Reviews mission to inform ouraudience through accurate, thorough, helpful, fair,and lively reporting and writing aboutthe Spokane area. What you'lldo: Prepare accurate, fair, balanced, and carefully researched stories to meet assigned deadlines.Write five to eight stories a week. Maintain good communicationwith editors for assignments and story ideas. Remain flexible to cover a wide range of features and hard news stories, including breaking news that could include violent crime, fires,and other public safety matters.Consider art possibilities for every story, both in print and online, to increase and improve audience engagement; pull in graphics, design, photo,and online team members so they can gain a better understanding of the story, when appropriate.Writestories clearly and concisely with knowledge of AP stylein a timelymatter.Pitch your own story ideas.Write online headlines, attach photos to stories online and properly code stories as instructed for online purposes.Take photos using cellphonefor your stories when photographers are unavailable. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: A bachelors degree in journalism or pursuing a degree in journalism.Valid drivers license.Proficient in use of a computer and smartphone. Abilityto use a smartphone to filesstories and multimedia from the field and to stay current with news events.
