Expand the Canon / Hedgepig Ensemble
Brooklyn, NY
US
DESCRIPTION
Founded in 2012, Hedgepig Ensemble Theatre reimagines the classics, creating a legacy of storytelling with gender equity at its core. With the launch of Expand the Canon in 2020, the company has earned international recognition for its work elevating the voices of women and gender-expansive writers in the classics. With write ups in American Theatre, Playbill, and the New York Times, Hedgepig is a growing advocacy organization, calling for theatres and education programs to produce classic plays by women and underrepresented genders –– and solidify their legacy in the canon.
Hedgepig Ensemble Theatre is seeking a part-time Marketing Associate to lead press and marketing strategy of its flagship program, Expand the Canon. This role will help define and develop Expand the Canon’s brand, voice, and relationships with community and audience. They are passionate about the mission of the organization and believe advocacy work deserves to be supported and funded. This person will work closely with the Artistic Director to set and execute strategy leading to audience and subscriber growth. They also will have the support of a Marketing Coordinator, who will regularly post on social media channels.
This role is remote, though familiarity with the New York City theatrical landscape is preferred, and approximately 5 hours per week, flexible to your schedule.
Ideal candidates are excited to build the brand, and communicate through press, email marketing, and advertising the value, importance, and impact of expanding the canon. They are self-starters and excellent communicators, who value collaboration, transparency, and organized workflows. They are eager to evangelize our mission, strategize, and have some experience in public relations and media. Members of a larger organization wanting to take on a strategic role as well as freelancers are attractive candidates and encouraged to apply.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Creating and executing email communications to further develop our audience
- Developing and maintaining industry and press contact lists
- Writing press releases and managing press outreach
- Providing oversight on social media communications and strategy
- Collaborating with Artistic and Managing Directors to research and implement marketing, growth, and revenue strategies, including highlighting and selling subscription plans
- Attending weekly meetings with the leadership team
- Guide a monthly Board committee to supplement our activities and outreach
Qualifications*:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field. While we want someone who appreciates theatre’s power, we’re seeking someone focused on the PR and outreach side.
- Proactive and self-motivated, with a strong sense of initiative. You ideally like making lists and structures, as well as checking things off of them.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to craft compelling marketing & press messages. What frame or pitch gets a layperson interested in feminist theater? If you’ve got ideas, this role is right for you!
- Ability to analyze data and trends to support campaign decisions and strategy. If you love knowing how many subscribers click your email links or optimizing subject lines: excellent.
- Proficient in media outreach, press release writing, and pitching techniques. We have a social media coordinator, so our earned media coverage can be more your focus.
- Creative thinking for content creation, campaign ideas, and design. While we have a designer so that work isn’t primarily on you, coming with new approaches, looks, and tag lines is helpful for staff collaboration.
Remuneration: Stipend of $400/month stipend for approximately 5 hours of work per week, which will increase in tandem with organizational success.
*Hedgepig is committed to building a dynamic and diverse leadership team. Candidates from historically underrepresented groups in the classics are encouraged to apply. Statistically, women rarely apply for roles they do not feel "100% qualified for" – we recognize qualification and experience in their many forms. We encourage your application.
To apply, please submit information through this form where you will upload a resume and answer 4 questions in lieu of a cover letter. We are accepting rolling applications through February 10, 2025. We hope to have this associate join the team by March 1.
