Job Description:
The Managing Editor for Callaloo literary journal is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the daily operations, staff, and financial management of the journal. This position requires a dynamic individual who can manage multiple aspects of the publication process while supporting the Executive Editor in both editorial and administrative functions.
This includes contributing to editorial planning and content for issues of the journal and managing all aspects of the content workflow, from cultivating referees and author selection, to supervising editors and production staff, and managing author contracts, payment and other elements of operations. The Managing Editor is responsible for the journal's budget, staff hiring and maintaining production schedules with the journal's publisher. The Managing Editor also supports grant solicitation and fundraising efforts to support funding for the journal.
This position is hybrid-eligible.
This is a fixed-term position, renewable annually from January 1, 2025, to June 30, 2029, dependent on funding.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree plus five to seven years of experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. MFA or Phd in English/Creative Writing/African American or Diaspora Studies preferred.
- Experience in grant writing and development is a plus.
- Deep experience and knowledge of African diaspora literature and arts is preferred.
- Proven experience in editorial management, preferably within a literary journal or similar publication.
- Expertise in Submittable application management system.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
- Familiarity with budgeting and financial management.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical issues efficiently.
