Position: Library Assistant
The City of High Point is currently seeking a Library Assistant that performs routine para-professional and customer service work in the Public Library, which involves lending materials, keeping records of those materials and their borrowers, and keeping books in order on shelves. Does related work as required.
Responsibilities:
- Answers borrowers’ questions about reserves in person and over the telephone, using information found in the computer.
- Answers the telephone and transfers calls to other parts of the library.
- Checks books and non-print materials out to borrowers, scans RFID tags barcodes with antenna or scanner and operates computer and circulation system.
- Registers new borrowers, which involves oral communication, reading applications filled out by the borrower, entering information into a computer, and interpreting information on driver’s license.
- Collects fees for damaged and lost materials and Friends Continuous Book Sale, involving finding and interpreting information in the computer and operating a money transaction program and credit card machine.
- Checks shelves for overdue, lost and requested materials which involves going to all three floors of the Library and searching shelves for materials listed on a computer printout.
- Straightens shelves, performs shelf-reading, shifts books, checks in materials, sorts books, writes RFID tags, and inspects returned items for damage or missing components.
- Processes reserved materials for library and self-service lockers at other locations pick up.
- Instructs library customers in use of the computerized catalog.
- Assists borrowers with self-checks and public with using the photocopier.
- Schedules maintenance and repairs for photocopier when needed.
- Full-time employee - acts as team leader in absence of the supervisor.
- Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- At least one (1) year of verifiable retail or similar customer service experience in the last five years.
- Basic business office practices, arithmetic and/or business math, typing, operation of computer, and principles of filing.
- Must have a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
- Must be able to deal and communicate well with the public and other employees.
- Must have good listening skills and be self-motivated.
- Must be able to read, interpret, and manipulate information in computerized records.
- Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
- Must be able to understand shelf order and the meaning of information on book spines.
- Must be able to move to all three floors of the library, push carts of books, and move books to and from carts and shelves.
- Must be able to work one (1) evening a week and a weekend rotation of every 4th weekend, with occasional 3rd weekend.
Physical Requirements:
- Hearing/Speaking - Necessary to converse with people in person and over the phone.
- Visual Abilities - Required for this position, including acuity and depth perception.
- Physical Strength - Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or 20 pounds of force frequently.
- Employee must reach to answer telephone, work with computer terminal, etc.
Mental Activity/Requirements:
- Reasoning - Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks.
- Mathematics Ability - Ability to use arithmetic for fees and time sheets.
- Language Ability - Ability to read, write, and converse effectively.
Environmental Conditions:
- Inside Environmental Conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
- No environmental hazards indicated for this position.
