We Are Currently Recruiting For The Position Of
Sr. Director, Communications, PR and Government Affairs - Modesto, CA
Job Summary
The Senior Director, Communications is the company spokesperson and is responsible for leading, implementing, and analyzing our internal and external communication strategies across owned and earned platforms to promote the organization’s mission, priorities, brand, reputation and initiatives, including PR, community relations, philanthropic activation, government and legislative affairs, crisis mitigation, and ESG. This Senior Director has an energetic, entrepreneurial mindset and is a writer, an associate advocate, a coach, and has a genuine love to celebrate people, communities and cultures with a passion to positively influence the TSMC culture. Partnering closely with executive leadership, the Marketing and HR groups, and various stake holders throughout the organization, this position connects all business functions with aligned communications, developing the company’s voice and narratives, and driving a customer centric culture. This position will represent the "face" of TSMC with regular interactions with store managers, journalists and community leaders
Key Responsibilities And Accountabilities
- Strategy:
- Architect communication strategies and programs that deliver consistent corporate messaging to enrich understanding and execution of company, banner and departmental priorities and initiatives
- Support and influences leadership team in connecting with associates to deliver consistent messaging that’s aligned to business objectives
- Drive and influence initiatives using strong grasp on organizational culture
- Communications:
- Lead development of messaging platforms aligned with company strategy, initiatives, values and culture, including but not limited to internal website (SharePoint), breakroom TV (video production), company website (external), and web content (on store banner sites, LinkedIn, Wiki, etc.) to ensure consistency of brand voice, messaging and positioning
- Develop new and creative methods and channels for sending communications and connecting meaningfully with store associates, partnering with Retail Operations, HR and IT
- Write and edit communication materials, including presentations, speeches, posts, holding statements, press releases, and scripts
- Public Relations:
- Design and implement public relations campaigns and integrated communications that cultivate media relations, engage key stakeholders, build brand awareness and community engagement while protecting and enhancing reputation
- Detect public relations issues as they emerge and consult with appropriate executives to address
- Serve as company spokesperson and ambassador as the public face for TSMC with members of the media, company constituents, and the public
- Build and maintain relationships with local, regional, and top-tier national media organizations and individual journalists, community and industry thought leaders, and influencers to shape narrative and pitch story ideas that result in positive news coverage and competitive positioning in the consumer and trade media markets
- Develop and oversee an editorial calendar for proactive media opportunities and industry events and conferences (e.g., awards, expert interviews, op-eds, panels, and keynotes) and prepare and support leadership team during interviews and speaking engagements with background material, key messages, media prep/coaching)
- Government Affairs
- Direct governmental affairs needs in areas of federal (CA, NV, WA, OR) and state (county and city ordinances) legislative requirements by influencing legislation, keeping internal constituents informed and prepared, and lobbying industry associations (CGA, FM)
- Partner with Retail Operations and Real Estate for local government engagement in key geographies
- Department Leadership
- Manage teams responsible for design, execution and implementation of internal and external communications programs, company events, public relations, community relations, government affairs, video production studio, CARES Foundation, and ESG
- Attract, inspire, and retain top-tier communications, public relations and government affairs professionals through inclusive leadership, development, and a compelling vision
- Lead by example with integrity, resilience, and a commitment to excellence—setting a high standard for communication, strategic thinking, and ethical behavior
- Create annual budget for communications team and ensure compliance
Requirements (Knowledge, Skills And Abilities)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to advocate the company's position
- Impeccable copywriting and copy-editing abilities to create clear and concise communications in the appropriate tone/voice, that distills information into compelling, memorable messaging
- A creative thinker, doer, and leader who can solve problems and seeks to build understanding amid ambiguity
- Highly organized, detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines consistently in a fast-paced environment where great ideas can come from everyone, at every level
- Must possess superior news judgment, persuasive communication skills and ability to take initiative
- Experience analyzing situations and giving sound professional judgment on news value, strategic communications, public opinion, and media relations, government affairs and community engagement.
- Strong presence with the confidence to share new ideas or challenge current thinking, both 1:1 and in groups that represent different levels and experience
- Ability to stay calm under pressure and consistently demonstrate exceptional judgment
- A successful track record of effectively managing 24/7 communications response cycles, as needed
- Knowledgeable about Retail (ideally grocery retail), Store Operations, Warehousing, Procurement
- An eagerness to learn and grow and the ability to help others do the same
- Proven experience hiring and managing top talent and enabling them to grow and thrive
- Ability to effectively interact with the news media, engaging positively with advocacy groups, activists, and NGOs.
- Grocery retail experience preferred
Experience: 12 years Retail and Corporate communications, PR, Public Affairs, government affairs, and community relations/philanthropic experience
Other: Some travel for media events, outreach, or speaking engagements
