Job Title: Control Systems Designer
Location: Houston, TX - Onsite
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Control Systems Designer to join our team. This role involves supervising and guiding a team of designers and drafters, managing the development of 2D/3D CAD models, and ensuring quality control in line with project standards. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in executing greenfield and brownfield projects across various industrial sectors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and provide technical leadership to a team of designers/drafters in the development of layouts, study drawings, detailed designs, and construction documents.
- Develop work plans, design deliverables, staffing requirements, and schedules aligned with project milestones.
- Oversee preparation of material requisitions and bid evaluations.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, engineering practices, and approved design standards.
- Coordinate and conduct site visits to resolve field issues and interpret documentation.
- Manage scope changes and prepare progress reports for both project and discipline leads.
- Maintain expertise in relevant Standard Application Programs (SAPs) and promote their use.
- Mentor junior staff, conduct performance reviews, and facilitate professional development.
- Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, equipment suppliers, and client representatives.
- Serve as a technical representative of the discipline on project and client interfaces.
Basic Qualifications:
- Recognized degree in engineering/scientific discipline or equivalent technical training in design, drafting, and CAD.
- Extensive experience in design/drafting and team management.
- Strong knowledge of drafting techniques, engineering drawings, construction materials, and relevant codes/standards.
- Proficiency in interpreting P&IDs and producing location plans, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, and installation details.
- Proven expertise with CAD tools including 2D/3D platforms such as MicroStation, SmartSketch, and S3D.
- Skilled in SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI).
Preferred Experience:
- Design experience in at least one of the following sectors:
- LNG/Natural gas processing
- Petrochemicals (e.g., HDPE, MEG, PVC)
- Hydrogen, ammonia, methanol production
- Carbon capture, power generation (solar, combined cycle)
- Water treatment and desalination
- Offshore/onshore pipelines
- Familiarity with leading industry licensors and process technologies.
- Knowledge of international codes such as IEC and NFPA 70 (NEC).
- Ability to reduce total installed costs (TIC) through innovative design strategies.
- Experience with complex vendor packages (compressors, turbines, heaters).
- Prior involvement in FEED or proposal phases as a Design Lead/Supervisor.
- Strong background in job hour estimating, material quantity takeoffs, and schedule development.
