As a Principal Video Software Engineer, you'll work on our backend systems and core game engine, enabling video use in an immersive 3D game environment. This team manages all video capabilities of the Roblox game engine, including video transcoding, capture, screen recording, 3D video rendering, and video ads. You Will: Architect and implement our vision for video in a 3D immersive environment. Optimize performance for quality across all platforms, from low-end phones to high-end desktops. Work across the entire platform, from backend transcoding to client rendering in 3D and camera capture. Apply research efforts practically into Roblox products. Collaborate with teams to improve existing functionalities and develop new pipelines and workflows. Follow our vision to prioritize the Roblox community. You Have: 8+ years of experience developing complex C++ applications, especially with C++17, on PCs, mobile devices (iOS and Android), and/or game consoles. Experience with mobile development on Android and/or iOS. Experience architecting, developing, and operating scalable, resilient backend microservices systems. Knowledge of video codecs such as AVC, HEVC, and AV1, understanding of video compression, delivery, and decoding. Familiarity with Video codecs, Vulkan, Metal, Android MediaCodec, or VideoToolbox. For roles based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay range is $322,170 — $391,590 USD, dependent on various factors including experience and market conditions. All full-time employees are also eligible for equity and benefits. Roles at our San Mateo headquarters are in-office Tuesday through Thursday, with optional in-office days on Monday and Friday.
