1.MUSIC DIRECTOR POSITION TITLE:
Pastoral Musician for Catholic Masses

Scope of Responsibilities
:
Provide accompaniment/cantor/choir leadership and plan, organize, lead and support contemporary music ensemble for Sunday morning 0900 and 1200 Catholic Masses and other Holy Days of Obligation. Music director will also furnish same for special religious services (not to exceed 275 hours total including services and rehearsals during a twelve-month period). Provide non-personal services (e.g., marriages and quinceañeras) in this capacity in support of the Catholic Parish Program.
3.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
3.1.
Possess at least two (2) years' experience as church accompanist/choir director/cantor/song leader/musician for Catholic liturgical services.
3.2.
Musical audition with Deputy Wing Chaplain, Catholic Community Priest and Chapel Superintendent or Non-commissioned Officer in charge (NCOIC).
3.2.1
Audition will be conducted prior to award.
3.2.2
Demonstrate high level of competence on organ and principal/secondary Instrument.
3.2.3
Demonstrate high level of competence in playing both traditional and contemporary music as well as playing desired liturgical settings for regular and special Masses.
3.2.4
Audio file of musical audition will be recorded during musical audition for further evaluation following the interview in order to aid in awarding the position.
3.3.
Identify by interview key components of the applicant's understanding of the liturgical worship experience - especially with regard to forms of music chosen, i.e., "high church" as opposed to "contemporary" worship forms, Psalm settings, introits, lay participation in choirs and music accompaniment options. Of key significance is the applicant's opinion of how the music portion of Sunday and weekday Masses are made relatable to active duty families attending.
3.4.
Possess a working knowledge of current Catholic liturgy and guidelines as well as an understanding of how to support liturgical rites with music, song, and assembly leadership. Have knowledge of Catholic hymnody and psalmody
3.5.
Play Piano and Organ proficiently. Possess the ability to lead an assembly in song, and to read music.
3.6.
Possess an education level to include, at a minimum, a high school diploma. Higher degree preferred including music degree, music studies, and/or liturgical studies.
3.7.
Sensitivity to the wide variety of faith expressions within the military community (capability of working in a pluralistic environment). Must be able to demonstrate. Dignity and respect are paramount.
3.8.
Desire and ability to work with diverse groups of people, sometimes in a high stress environment.
3.9.

4.GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Pastoral Musician will:
4.1.
Execute all assigned duties and responsibilities under the leadership of the Catholic Community Chaplain.
4.2.
Adhere to, and comply with all federal, state, and local laws/regulations as well as any applicable Air Force Instructions and Chapel Operating Instructions.
4.3.
Possess and demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with chapel staff, other musicians, volunteers, and members of other faith groups for ecumenical activities.
4.4 . Undergo successful background checks as directed by DoDI 1402.5 Criminal History Background Checks on Individuals in Child Care Services.
4.5.
Under the leadership of the Catholic Community Chaplain, establish a regular schedule of work. Schedule is to accommodate presence during rehearsals (minimum one per week), worship services (minimum one per week) and other musical programs, which will include evening and/or weekend hours, to include Sunday.
5.SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
5.1.
Rehearsals:
5.1.1.
. Provide piano or organ accompanist support for Mass for all regular rehearsals. Also, serve as a choir director.
5.1.2.
Form/direct volunteer children's choir and bell choir as needed for special services.
5.1.3.
Assist in ensuring the Chapel is cleaned up and equipment is properly stored & secured, lights turned off, and building secured, in accordance with chapel operating instruction.
5.2.
Worship Services:
5.2.1.
Provide accompaniment and assistance for all performances.
5.2.2.
Provide musical support which invites strong assembly participation in the liturgy in conjunction with formation and leadership of a volunteer choir and volunteer musicians.
5.2.3.
Work with contracted Pastor, Chaplains, and Chapel Staff in preparation and execution of weekly and seasonal choir rehearsals.
5.2.4.
Provide music which supports the rites and liturgies celebrated at Catholic Mass and other liturgical services (see Scope of Responsibilities). Music is chosen in conjunction with and under the guidance of the Catholic Priest/Chaplain.
5.2.5.
Participate in the entirety of the worship service
5.2.6.
Gather with all musicians, vocalists, and A/V technicians to break-down, store, and secure all equipment following the service. If another team is using the equipment immediately following, coordinate with that service music director to ensure smooth transition and that equipment if not broken down if they need it.
5.2.7.
The places of performance are Twin Peaks Chapel, DGMC Chapel, and 1st Street Chapel, Travis AFB, CA, unless otherwise directed
5.3.
Additional Duties:
5.3.1.
Maintain music library for adults and children. Supply recommendations for purchase of new music to be coordinated with the Catholic Priest/Chaplain. New purchases to update music library are made according to yearly budget. Music director agrees to coordinate with other contracted music leaders and assist in filling out and submitting the purchase order for said music to the bookkeeper.
5.3.2.
Attend Parish Council, particular Chapel Staff meetings, and Liturgy Preparation meetings as directed by the Catholic Priest/Chaplain. These meetings serve to inform the music director of upcoming events and expectations which need special preparation and music support.
5.3.3.
When appropriate, meet with other contracted cantor/song-leader/musicians to coordinate seasonal service music.
5.3.4.
Meet with the Catholic Priest/Chaplain periodically to review music and exchange feedback.
5.3.5.
Develop and provide liturgical planning document in coordination with the Catholic Priest/Chaplain.
6.HOURS/UNITS OF WORK:
6.1.
Music director services will be provided during Sunday worship services and can be up totwo (2) hours in length. Practice sessions/rehearsals will be held prior to each service at a time to be determined by the Music director, with the approval of the Contract Officer or Catholic Chaplain.
6.2.
Special services, and practices/rehearsals for special services and are in addition to the normal weekly work units. Units are defined as a session, which is a minimum of an hour but not to exceed two hours, providing services listed in this PWS.

6.3.
Holy Days of Obligation: Mary, Mother of God. Ascension. Assumption of Mary. All Saints Day. Immaculate Conception. Christmas.
7.REPLACEMENTS:
Music director is responsible for continuous contract performance through contract period. Replacements may not be on a long-term, recurring basis, but only for required short-term absences of a personal nature. Candidates must meet all Catholic Pastoral Musician qualifications listed above and be an agreeable substitute by the Catholic Chaplain in charge. Resume and references are required for approval. The government reserves the right to refuse any candidate if he or she does not meet all required qualifications. The Music director shall submit a resume for each candidate.
7.1.
Replacement candidates (sub music directors) can be approved in advance to facilitate ease of filling required absence due to unplanned events.
7.2.
All sub music directors must meet the same qualifications as the music director and be approved by the Wing Chaplain.
