Position Summary:
Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Senior Police Communications Operator - Boca Raton, FL.
The Senior Police Communications Operator (SPCO) must ensure that the Communications Center is prepared to analyze/handle all emergency situations in a timely, efficient, and appropriate manner.
Summary of Responsibilities: Must direct all the activities of call-takers, dispatchers, trainers, trainees, and training programs. Must monitor radios and telephones to ensure that Public Communications Operators are in compliance with applicable communication standards while fostering favorable public relations. Ensure that all supervised personnel are prepared and capable to handle all types of emergencies and/or disasters e.g. active shooter calls, hurricanes, medicals, receiving/dispatching requests for routine/emergency Law Enforcement services, FCIC/NCIC, etc. Prepare shift schedules to meet the needs of the Communications Center, approve overtime, scheduled sick time and vacations. Evaluate employee performance and prepare performance appraisals in a timely manner. Review end of shift activities with relieving shifts to ensure an accurate exchange of information. Identify staff development and training needs to ensure that training is completed in a timely manner in accordance with the State of Florida Department of Health-911 Telecommunication's Certification. Perform FCIC Terminal Agency Coordinator (T.A.C.) responsibilities. Analyze evolving situations, make accurate judgments and effective decisions under pressure, during emergency situations and take appropriate action. Performs other duties as required. Operate Police and other radio systems, monitor alarms, access control and camera systems. 24/7 Monitor gun detection software, and License Plate Recognition system by responding, verifying, entering hot list information, trespass warnings, risk protection orders and behavioral threat issues associated with the designated license plate, and providing the appropriate response, for both firearm detection and License plate detection. Dispatching officers and other emergency personnel as needed in accordance with departmental policy and procedure. Handle emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, prioritize calls and channel pertinent information to officers and supervisory personnel. Accurately documenting officer status location and activity. Make necessary emergency notifications. Operate Criminal Justice Information Systems computer terminal to include inquiries and entering persons, vehicles and property at the direction of officers. Provide the public with assistance on complaints and informational services, lost and found property, directions, fingerprinting and other services. Use tact and discretion. Observe strict confidentiality rules. Direct persons to proper supervisory level as necessary. Monitor messages directed to the department and information related to local criminal activity, and monitoring weather and campus security issues as a 24/7 Emergency Management warning point, which would require notification to all campuses through the Sircom system in accordance with departmental policy and procedures. Demonstrate knowledge of police terminology and procedures, Florida criminal and civil law as it pertains to police operations, campus geography, police services and University policies and procedures pertaining to police operations. Preferred Qualifications/Skills:
Possess the following skills in order to best handle emergency situations: communicate effectively, convey assurance, exercise tact and patience in stressful situations, and dispatch emergency personnel.
Able to master a variety of communications equipment, such as radios, telephones, recording devices and CAD terminals efficiently.
Successfully pass proficiency test within 6 months of employment.
Salary: $31.61 per hour.
