Housing: Room and board provided
Compensation: $4,000
Located in the scenic Berkshire-Taconic landscape in the quiet northwest corner of Connecticut, The Hotchkiss School is a community in which faculty and staff members build careers and grow as professionals. We seek to identify, recruit, and develop faculty and staff members who bring a diversity of experiences, perspectives, talents, and backgrounds. Collectively, we are dedicated to supporting the intellectual, social, and emotional growth of nearly 600 students who come from around the country and the world.
Program Description:
The MacLeish Scholars Program affords selected high-school seniors the opportunity to conduct primary-source research on specific authors and other topics in the history of literature. Additionally, the Program has two other key components: bookmaking and creative writing. Students spend each morning working in the archives at Yale on literary research projects of their own design. They spend afternoons on a longform creative writing project, as well as studying and practicing the art of bookmaking—binding, papermaking, printing, etc.—with the goal of crafting a book to hold their creative work.
Position Description:
The creative writing instructor designs and implements the creative writing portion of the curriculum. Students work on creative writing each afternoon for about 2-3 hours, with longer days on weekends. The cohort of students includes advanced creative writers as well as students who have never written creatively before. The instructor for this program will lead students through a series of differentiated exercises and workshops that establish the planning and drafting processes underlying successful creative expression.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The bulk of the creative writing instructor’s work involves mentoring students as they build their own body of creative work. This process includes one-on-one instruction for each student as their work evolves. The instructor also fosters a collaborative spirit in the course by overseeing student-led workshops on their creative work. In turn, the instructor aids students in realizing their vision as a holistic, interconnected final product. Finally, the creative writing instructor works closely with the program director and the bookmaker to ensure that students’ creative writing is responsive to their other work in the program (and vice versa). Working with the bookmaker is especially crucial as each student will be crafting a book structure that they see as the ideal vessel for their creative writing.
This position includes night duty and other forms of supervision in the dorm. The instructor can expect to be on duty—and available to help students with their creative work—every other night for the program’s duration. The instructor will also be expected to accompany students on field trips, provide supervision for smaller outings, and assist as needed with the general administration of this program.
Qualifications:
Candidates must be prepared to build and teach a creative writing curriculum. For this reason, candidates must have experience in all aspects of teaching creative writing: assisting with idea development, mentoring through drafting stages, leading workshops, assisting with the compilation of a final product, etc. The strongest candidates will have published—or will have otherwise received recognition for—their own creative work. It would also be helpful to have some background in literary analysis and research methods.
Application Information:
Through the online application which can be found at hotchkiss.org/careers under “Summer Opportunities”, interested candidates should submit a cover letter and résumé/CV. The School is committed to building and supporting a diverse community where all feel safe, seen, and supported. Successful applicants will address their ability to contribute to a warm, inclusive, and exciting learning environment. APPLY NOW!
