Public Relations Specialist –Journeyman
***This position requires an active Public Trust clearance. ***
The Journeyman Public Relations Specialist will provide comprehensive public affairs and communication support to the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center. The role will focus on producing high-quality communications for environmental programs, including active duty, Guard, Reserve, and Base Realignment and Closure installations. The ideal candidate will have experience working independently on complex communication tasks, handling multiple projects with tight deadlines, and ensuring the accurate delivery of information to key stakeholders.
Compensation & Benefits:
Estimated Starting Salary Range for Public Relations Specialist -Journeyman: $74,000. Pay commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities Include:
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement communication strategies that align with AFIMSC and environmental program goals.
- Produce written and visual content for a variety of audiences and platforms, to include web articles, newsletters, social media, and media releases.
- Conduct ongoing measurement and evaluation of outreach efforts.
- Research, evaluate, and interpret technical information to create compelling communication materials that translate complex environmental topics for diverse audiences.
- Plan and coordinate public affairs events such as press conferences, industry meetings, Restoration Advisory Boards, and environmental outreach campaigns.
- Support ongoing measurement and analysis of communication efforts, including media engagement and public sentiment.
- Manage multiple deliverables and projects, ensuring timely production and quality control in accordance with Air Force Public Affairs standards.
- Assist in the development and review of public affairs guidance, communication plans, and other strategic documents.
- Coordinate logistics for meetings and events, record minutes, and prepare presentations or other briefing materials.
- Work closely with leadership to ensure communication materials meet branding and style standards, following Air Force and Department of Defense guidelines.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, or similar field.
- 5-10 years communications/multimedia/public affairs experience, with a strong preference for Department of Defense Public Affairs experience or similar government communication experience.
- Must include a demonstrable portfolio of successful work (e.g., press releases, presentations, articles, social media posts, website content, etc.).
- Must be a self-starter with excellent time management and a willingness to learn.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage complex communication projects from conception to delivery with minimal oversight.
- Proficient written and verbal communication.
- Experience writing and creating products for a multitude of communication platforms, including print, broadcast, web, social media, and more.
- Event planning experience preferred, especially navigating remote technology such as Zoom, AdobeConnect, or Microsoft Teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office required; Adobe Creative Suite experience preferred.
- Expertise in Associated Press style for journalistic writing, with strong editing and proofreading skills.
- Photography and basic photo editing skills preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of AP style and experienced editing capabilities are highly preferred.
- Experience working with Air Force public affairs programs and familiarity with Air Force communication protocols and guidelines is preferred.
- Ability to ensure all materials are in compliance with Air Force branding, security, and public affairs standards.
- Ability to pass a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
- Ability to work with a remote team, with occasional in-office support at AFIMSC headquarters.
- Some travel required to support public affairs activities at Air Force installations, including environmental and BRAC events.
- Understanding of environmental communications related to restoration, compliance, pollution prevention, and base closures is a strong advantage.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and produce high-quality work under pressure.
- Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.
