Responsibilities
The Communications Department is responsible to build, grow and protect Mayo Clinic’s reputation in a way that shapes the external environment and nurtures the culture to help achieve the mission of the organization. Department functions consist of reputation management including thought leadership and issues/crisis response; client communications and engagement programs; staff engagement; content and channels; government and community engagement; strategy and insights; visual communications, and communications services.
The Creative Director within the Communications Department leads and inspires a talented team of designers, illustrators, and visual artists to deliver innovative, high-quality creative solutions. This leader is responsible for developing and executing visual strategies that support Mayo Clinic’s brand objectives, audience insights, and project goals. The work will include translating vision into compelling concepts for both static and digital campaigns, events, executive engagement, and enterprise initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Creative Leadership: Lead and inspire a team of designers, illustrators, and visual artists to produce innovative and high-quality creative work.
Strategic Vision: Develop and execute visual strategies that align with brand objectives, audience insights, and project goals.
Concept and Execution Development: Ability to translate vision into the creation and execution of compelling concepts for static and digital campaigns, events, executive engagement, and enterprise initiatives as needed.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with executive, communications, and marketing teams to ensure alignment of visual storytelling with messaging and business goals.
Contributor Mindset: Assist in the design and execution of creative needs including facilitation of photo shoots with internal team and vendors.
Project Oversight: Excellence in managing multiple projects simultaneously, balancing creative vision with tight deadlines and budget constraints.
Executive Client & Stakeholder Communication: Present ideas, concepts, and final work to stakeholders, incorporating feedback effectively.
Trend Awareness: Stay up to date with design trends, emerging technologies, and industry best practices to keep the brand visually fresh and competitive.
Qualifications
Requires a master’s degree in a related field plus 5 years of relevant work experience; or a bachelor's degree in a related field plus 7 years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Graphic Design, Fine Arts, Visual Communication, or a related field.
Preferred Technical Proficiency: Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects), Sketch, Figma, or other relevant design tools.
Leadership Abilities: Proven experience in leading, mentoring, and managing creative teams.
Conceptual Thinking: Strong ability to translate abstract ideas into powerful visual materials and campaigns.
Project Management: Ability to handle multiple projects with efficiency and precision.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present and defend creative ideas effectively at the executive level.
Adaptability: Ability to pivot and adjust creative strategies based on feedback, data insights, and market trends.
Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate in a way that creates clarity, simplifies messages, and aligns with organizational strategy. Knowledge of channels for communication and the ability to build effective communication and engagement strategies.
Strong alignment with Mayo's core values. Relationship oriented, high-performing individual with a strong balance of EQ and IQ. Demonstrates executive presence and servant leadership. Must possess strong leadership, business, analytical, oral and written communication, presentation skills, and superior interpersonal skills to facilitate effective relationships both within and outside of Mayo Clinic.
Successful history of working effectively in a complex, matrixed, and collaborative environment that expects and promotes teamwork. Strong strategic judgment. Ability to evaluate and improve upon existing processes and develop/implement new processes where appropriate. Must demonstrate the ability to manage sensitive/confidential/proprietary information. Ability to work across an organization with excellent communication and customer service orientation. Ability to prioritize and communicate priorities in alignment with strategy.
