The Communications Department (COM) is the Fund’s strategic center for communication. It develops and coordinates the IMF’s external and internal communications strategy, shapes the IMF’s key messages, advises IMF Management and staff on how best to convey key messages, and monitors and responds to what people outside the IMF say about the institution and its activity.
The Policy Communications Division (COMPC) develops and disseminates IMF messages aimed at a variety of audiences, including policymakers, academics, media, civil society, students, and individuals with a keen interest in international economics and finance. The division creates and publishes content on several platforms: the IMF Blog, Finance & Development magazine (a quarterly flagship print and digital publication), Country Focus (web-based articles on IMF’s policy advice to its membership), the IMF’s Factsheet Series as well as multimedia products, such as podcasts, videos, and social media products and campaigns. The division also monitors and assesses the impact of products, using data analytics.
Under the general supervision of the Division’s managers, specific responsibilities in policy communications will include:
Serve as managing editor of Finance & Development magazine. This involves leading the editorial team, overseeing the production of the magazine’s print and digital editions, and driving innovations to serve the readership across IMF member countries. Develop compelling written and multimedia content that showcases some of the most influential voices in economics and finance. Help explain complex issues, including the IMF’s work, to a general audience using non-technical language, compelling data, and visual storytelling. Edit and draft articles, opinion pieces, blog posts, and other content with an eye toward clear, concise and illuminating content that can be tailored to various channels and platforms, including social media and AI applications Contribute to other divisional and departmental efforts, as needed.
Qualifications
The candidate will have an advanced university degree, or equivalent, in journalism, communications, economics, or a related field, along with a minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, a university degree or equivalent, plus 14 years of relevant professional experience, are required. Fluency in other languages is a plus, as is work experience in the Asia Pacific region.
The ideal candidate must be a seasoned editor and writer, preferably with a background in economic and financial journalism. The candidate must also have a deep understanding of economics and finance, strong editorial judgment, and ability to translate technical material for a broader audience. He/she must have a proven ability to create compelling narratives across various platforms. Experience with writing various communications products including opinion pieces, articles, and newsletters is essential. Deep intellectual curiosity and an open mind are the starting points for every aspect of our work. The ideal candidate must have a proven track record in leading teams, based on strong people management skills. Openness to feedback and excellent interpersonal skills are non-negotiable.
A regular staff member who is selected to fill the vacancy will maintain their open-ended status. If the selected candidate is a contractual employee, they will be offered a Term staff appointment. Staff members already on a term appointment will continue their current term but may receive an extension provided that their current term appointment has not already been extended.
It is expected that the position will be filled by a qualified candidate from within the department.
