POSITION DESCRIPTION: Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield’s Public Library, is seeking part-time senior assistants in the Youth Services Department. The work involves assisting supervisors in meeting library and departmental goals by performing certain specific functions, typically public desk service, but including clerical work for the supervisor. These positions require the ability and desire to engage patrons and solve problems.
Job Description
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield’s Public Library, is seeking part-time senior assistants in the Youth Services Department. The work involves assisting supervisors in meeting library and departmental goals by performing certain specific functions, typically public desk service, but including clerical work for the supervisor. These positions require the ability and desire to engage patrons and solve problems.
DUTIES: This substitute position will assist patrons in person, by telephone, and electronically in locating and using materials in the Young Adult department specifically and the greater library generally. They will staff the department’s public service desk without supervision; will engage young adult patrons; will conduct basic clerical duties assigned by the department supervisor; will assist with ongoing projects and other duties as assigned, including possible cross-training in other library departments. Success in this role requires the ability to interact with young people, including setting boundaries and reinforcing expectations.
HOURS AVAILABLE: Hours may fluctuate from zero to nineteen hours per week and include some day, evening, and weekend hours, depending on departmental needs. We are currently seeking to fill temporary weekend hours (one teammate, working 10am-5pm) or (two teammates, working 10am-1:30pm and 1-5pm) with the possibility of additional substitute hours.
Requirements
- An associate’s degree or two years of college, or one year of related public library employment is required; a bachelor’s degree, two years of directly-related public library experience, or directly related college courses are desired.
- Demonstrated organizational and problem solving skills.
- Ability to effectively interact with the public at all ages and levels of research experience, including an ability to maintain the proper discipline and decorum of library visitors.
- Comfortable learning about and using new and changing library technology.
- Computer experience and aptitude, including keyboard skills.
- Ability to work efficiently with minimum supervision.
