Sacramento is a vibrant news town, and this reporter has a huge role in determining how we cover stories in the capital of California and in Northern California. The position calls for moving fast with the urgency required for covering breaking news, and it offers great opportunities to go deeper and develop enterprise stories off the news.

The reporting is competitive and rewarding. The opportunities are vast, from fast-moving breaking news to meaningful stories that touch every aspect of life in California. When big news happens, this reporter not only kicks it off, but also plays a key role in working with a team of editors and reporters in our collaborative, award-winning newsroom.

At The Sacramento Bee, you will write for a large and engaged audience passionate about local news. Sacramento is a vibrant region offering rich opportunities in journalism — it’s the state capital, home to professional sports teams Kings and A’s, ethnically diverse, and close to rivers and mountains and the recreational opportunities that help define California.

Responsibilities

• Cover breaking news and daily assignments with urgency and accuracy.
• Identify trends and produce distinctive stories that reflect the interests of Sacramento’s diverse communities.
• Consistently break news.
• Collaborate with visual, data, and audience teams to enhance storytelling through multimedia elements.
• Balance quick-turn news coverage with deeply reported enterprise pieces.
• Represent The Sacramento Bee in community events or live journalism initiatives.
• Think about audience first and always, with a commitment to tactics that grow readership.
• Work well in a team environment.
  
  

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of professional reporting experience
• Strong reporting, writing, sourcing, and editing skills
• Excellent news judgment and commitment to ethical journalism
• The ability to thrive in a fast-paced newsroom environment while meeting deadlines
• A commitment to delivering breaking news coverage that is first and best in a competitive media market
• Fluency in digital storytelling and social media
• The ability to develop and pitch a steady stream of story ideas
• Understanding of readership metrics and SEO best practices
• A collaborative spirit and strong interpersonal skills
• College degree or equivalent work experience
  
  

The anticipated base pay range for this position is between $29.75 and $37.44 per hour based on 37.5 hours per week. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and relevant education.
