As General Manager for the Santa Barbara News-Press, you will lead the way as we reimagine the Santa Barbara News-Press as a future-focused nonprofit newsroom dedicated to Santa Barbara County. The General Manager will play a crucial role in using research and community listening to create and execute sustainable business plans for the News-Press. The General Manager will be the brand ambassador for the News-Press, communicating the community's need and desire for additional quality, in-depth local news and information. You will work with counterparts at NEWSWELL to grow our community support through events and partnerships, energize our membership base with newsletters and meet-ups, and ensure revenue streams to support our mission-driven journalism. This role will work to uplift and strengthen the entire Santa Barbara media ecosystem by sharing content for free, offering to partner on events, offering training on new media products or technology and striving to add to the overall journalism footprint in Santa Barbara County.

The pay scale for this position ranges from $90,894 - $125,000
What you'll do
You will lead Liaison between our newsroom and the community, ensuring transparency and responsiveness to community feedback and concerns. Oversee the editorial and revenue functions of the News-Press, with support from editorial and revenue leaders at NEWSWELL. Attend community meetings, write articles, and/or appear on other media to help tell our story of community-focused journalism and support for the overall media ecosystem. Using community listening sessions and feedback, help formulate and execute a sustainable business plan for the News-Press. Partnering with NEWSWELL, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Center for the Future of Local News at Cronkite, and local Santa Barbara schools and universities, propose and execute local news experiments, projects and products that push our industry forward and connect with new readers/consumers. Work with the NEWSWELL AI team to use smart AI practices and tools to extend newsgathering and delivery in Santa Barbara County. Working with engineering/product teams at NEWSWELL, identify and implement product launches and improvements to help better deliver news and information to more people in Santa Barbara County, especially those who do not currently consume news. Work with editorial leaders to develop an audience-centric content and product strategy to ensure our news is relevant and helpful to readers' lives. Plan and implement outreach initiatives, events, and campaigns to enhance awareness of our newsroom and support the community. Cultivate partnerships with local media, organizations, schools, and businesses to support the greater Santa Barbara community. With NEWSWELL, create and execute an outreach plan for local, state and national supporters, sharing our story and path to success. Collaborate to create special projects that resonate with the community, promote meaningful dialogue and have opportunities for sponsorship or underwriting. Oversee site maintenance, newsletters, social accounts and if needed in the future, print operations and distribution. Work with our membership team to advance membership goals for the News-Press. Work with digital advertising agencies as needed. What you'll need
Ability to set a compelling direction for a reimagined news organization. Proven experience in recruiting, motivating, and retaining high-performance teams. Strong capability to formulate and execute sustainable business plans. Proficiency to establish clear objectives and drive continuous improvement. Exceptional interpersonal skills to represent the newsroom and engage with diverse stakeholders. Comfortable writing articles, speaking at events, or appearing on media to advocate for local journalism. Proficient in creating outreach plans to local, state, and national supporters and funders. Ability to organize events, campaigns and initiatives that connect with the public. Excellent skills in building and nurturing relationships with media, nonprofits, schools, and community organizations. Experience in launching and improving media products for underserved audiences. Willingness to test and iterate on new ideas, projects, and storytelling formats. Strong ability to work with editorial leaders to align content with community needs. Demonstrated experience in handling multiple responsibilities and projects effectively. Relevant qualifications
Bachelor's degree or master's degree in journalism or related field related or an equivalent combination of education and experience A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in community relations, newsroom or start-up operations, or a related field, with at least (5) five years in management Preferred Skills and Abilities:
