Overview
The Free Press is building an investigations desk packed with ambitious newshounds eager to land scoops that shape the national conversation. You might be a junior reporter at a local paper, covering courts, council meetings, or crime, and eager to make your big break. Or you might be a seasoned journalist at a major paper, tired of the same old beat and burning to expose wrongdoing in places you’re not allowed to touch.
Requirements
- You don’t need a degree to apply, but you must fulfill the following criteria:
- Clips that demonstrate you have hustle, curiosity, doggedness, and independence.
- At least eight years’ experience at a news outlet—covering fast-moving events and/or unpeeling multilayered stories in an interesting way. You must also be currently working as a reporter/writer either as a freelancer or full-time.
- Ideas for investigations that expose not just what is worthy, but what will get readers talking.
- A passion for The Free Press: you’ve read our stories, you understand our mission, and you know how you can bring value to our team.
- Eagerness to work in a start-up environment. You aren’t just breaking news; you are building a newsroom. Our team is composed of people who are enthusiastic, nimble, and collaborative.
- If you’re interested, please send a short cover letter explaining why you’re the right fit; a handful of Free Press investigation ideas of no more than 150 words each (be ambitious—but also show you understand what is possible); and your résumé.
