Overview
Under general supervision, provides the verbatim official record of all court testimony and activity, including grand jury proceedings when necessary; prepares transcripts of court proceedings as directed.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a highly skilled, certified, and experienced class responsible for creating verbatim documentation of court proceedings in criminal, civil, and other settings as assigned.
Hiring Incentive
Each full-time Official Court Reporter hired with the Court will receive a total of up to $15,000 hiring incentive depending on hours worked, paid as follows:
- Full-time: $7,500 the first full pay period following the hire date.
- Full-time: $7,500 after completing 2080 hours in paid status, contingent upon subsequent annual appropriations for similar court reporter-related purposes.
Depending on assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Keeping records of appeal notices and work extension requests; overseeing maintenance and storage of Court Reporter notes and records; ensuring timely destruction of Court Reporter records in accordance with governing rules and statutes.
- Responding promptly to transcript requests, including those related to appeals.
- Attending court and other proceedings, using appropriate stenographic or voice reporting equipment to make verbatim official records of all proceedings; may record quasi-judicial hearings and meetings.
- Reading back transcripts during trials or other court proceedings upon request.
- Preparing transcripts according to standardized formats and within legal time limits; reviewing and certifying the accuracy of printed transcripts; filing them with the court clerk promptly; providing transcripts as required.
- Researching technical, legal, medical, and other specialized terms as necessary; requesting clarification for unclear or inaudible statements.
- Collating and binding transcripts following established procedures.
- Reviewing court calendars and coordinating with other court or contract reporters to meet the Court’s needs.
- Operating office equipment, including transcription machines, computers, printers, and related devices.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Proficient knowledge of:
- Principles, practices, methods, and techniques of court shorthand reporting.
- Clerical and legal record keeping practices and procedures.
- Basic legal, medical, and related technical terminology and processes.
- Business English, including spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, and grammar.
Certifications/Licenses Required: Current license as a Certified Shorthand Reporter issued by the Court Reporters Board of California.
- Criminal History Background Check—applicants will be fingerprinted.
- Loading court reporter notes daily as required by statute.
- Effective January 1, 2023, all transcripts must be made electronically available.
Court reporters collaborate to meet the Court’s service needs, which may include scheduling pro tem reporters and coordinating with the calendar clerk and court manager to minimize additional staffing needs through effective scheduling.
