Assists to develop, integrate and document structural and interior payload system requirements to establish the system design. Develops, maintains and modifies basic structural and interior payload system and component designs, using 3-D Computer Aided Design tools and/or other design methods, to provide product definition to other engineering groups, production operations, suppliers and external customers throughout the product lifecycle. Performs tests to validate and verify systems and components meet requirements and specifications. Assists with supplier development, test and production activities and coordination with the supplier to optimize the design and achieve program goals. Supports investigation of emerging technologies to develop concepts for future product designs to meet projected requirements. Works under general supervision.

Position Overview:

This is an airframe design engineer position in the Aerostructures Engineering Organization. Working with senior designers, the successful candidate will serve as a member of the Design Group supporting preliminary and detail design of primary and secondary airframe structure. Primary product lines for design activities will be unmanned aerial vehicles, modification of existing aircraft structures, fixed and rotary wing, and design-to-build activities for commercial and military aircraft including composite and metallic primary and secondary structure, mechanical system components/routings and electrical/avionics systems component installations.

Specific Responsibilities:

1. Work independently for short periods under guidance of other engineers.
2. Produce airframe structural configuration layouts and detail designs including preliminary sizing, joint layouts, interface boundary definitions of parts and assemblies employing metallic and composite materials.
3. Create and maintain CAD solid models and drawings of installations, assembly and detail components that meet all requirements such as structural integrity, interface boundaries, weight and cost targets as directed by the project engineer.
4. Coordinate with members of stress, manufacturing, procurement, quality control and other departments as required to mature the design from conception to production.
5. Create documentation to support design decisions and to identify and resolve potential issues.
6. Participate in periodic design reviews to ensure designs meet the requirements.
7. Prepare detail design packages for review, check and release.

Minimum Requirements:

1. Must be a US Citizen, Green Card Holder or Permanent Resident.
2. BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering from an accredited university.
3. 2+ years' experience in aerospace.
4. Experience with CATIA V5 w/ a focus on Generative Surface Design, Part Design and Assembly. Experience in Unigraphics or Siemens NX will be considered based on supporting background.
5. Familiar with industry standards for the manufacture, repair and assembly of composite components for aerospace.
6. Experience with StarTeam, or other product data management such as Enovia LCA or PDM.
7. Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
8. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and written.
9. Strong interpersonal skills.

Desired Requirements:

1. Experience with engineering and/or manufacturing development of structural parts and assemblies utilizing composite materials.
2. Experience with the composite part design process, including composites stacking sequence, lamination theory, honeycomb core, bonded assemblies, manufacturing and fabrication processes and post-cure machining operations.
3. Knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5 along with tolerance analysis capabilities.
4. Knowledge of ASME Y14.41 methods for Model Based Definition using CATIA V5 FTA (Functional Tolerancing and Annotations) is desired.
5. Experience with CATIA V5 CPD (Composite Part Design) and/or FiberSIM is a plus.
6. Ability to create and maintain parametric product geometry models is desired.
7. Experience with Smarteam product data management is desired.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to maneuver around equipment in test labs and on aircraft and work in a manufacturing facility supporting all elements of composite and metal manufacturing.
