Overview
Both the new Visualization Laboratory in the ES+SEAS Facility and the Fine Hall Visualization Laboratory present unique hardware and software challenges. Specialized skills and experience are required of those who lead visualization services, presentations, and training focused on those spaces.
This is a 2-year Term position.
Responsibilities Visualization Laboratories Development and Management
-Develop display configurations and scenarios so computers can deliver content to the very large display in the ES+SEAS Facility and the multiple displays of the Fine Hall Visualization Lab- Create demonstrations and examples that illustrate applications from all disciplines- Document scenarios to enable users to operate independently in the visualization labs- Design and maintain an advanced user interface for optimal access to, and operation of, the ES+SEAS Facility and Fine Hall visualization labs- Maintain the Python software used for controlling the display and managing features of the laboratory's systems- Maintain and optimize the control systems used to operate the Fine Hall Visualization Lab- Troubleshoot and diagnose operational issues in both labs- Collaborate with vendors and the University's AV Services team to identify and resolve problems
Education, Training, and Outreach Activities
- Provide expert guidance on the use of visualization hardware and software for research, teaching, and proposals - Collaborate with University departments, present visualization opportunities- Advise users about data preparation, lab capabilities, and interoperability with Research Computing resources- Coordinate and lead visualization workshops - Partner with Researcher Engagement colleagues to advance visualization, data management, and computing across all disciplines- Respond to help requests from users via email, support tickets, or in-person Help Sessions
Leadership and Professional Development
-Stewardship of the University's premier visualization spaces and associated compute, network, and storage systems- Supervise student, contract, and temporary employees who use the University's visualization systems and facilities- Pursue professional development opportunities and external partnerships that serve to bring best practices and knowledge to the University's research, scholarship, and education communities
Qualifications Essential Qualifications:
-At least 7 years of experience developing and presenting visualizations of science, engineering, and humanities datasets- At least 7 years of experience working with high-performance graphics hardware, computing, storage, networking, and related infrastructure- Strong software engineering and software version management skills with programming and scripting languages such as Python, R, and C/C++- Extensive experience with using and teaching the use of visualization software such as VisIt, ParaView, VTK, Matplotlib, ggplot2- Strong Linux, macOS, and Windows system administration skills, including management of advanced graphics hardware- Experience with visualizing geographic information systems (GIS) data- Expertise in computer architectures, storage, and networks, as well as resource schedulers- Strong analytical, problem-solving skills and attention to detail in customer requirements analysis- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build working relationships with people of diverse backgrounds, with a strong focus on customer service- Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and anticipate and address problems and delays- Flexibility in adjusting work schedule to accommodate priority needs for planned and unplanned downtime and system emergencies- Ability to work completely independently and self-motivated while managing multiple priorities- Ability to teach and mentor individuals and groups- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience working in an academic research environment- Experience with mapping textures onto computer-generated graphics- Experience with additional scientific visualization software packages like VMD- Experience with A/V control systems programming- Website development experience
