This job is on-site at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in the Bronx. It’s a 2-hour weekly commitment (Thursdays, 3:30-5:30pm). Please do not apply if you are not available during those hours.
Job Overview:
We are seeking a passionate and experienced after-school teacher to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a background in education, journalism, or a related field, and a genuine enthusiasm for working with elementary school students. Undergraduate and graduate school candidates are highly encouraged to apply. This position involves leading dynamic after-school classes for children, following a guided lesson plan, and helping them develop essential writing, research, critical thinking, and communication skills through engaging activities and projects.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement an engaging journalism curriculum and lesson plans that align with the interests and needs of students, focusing on topics such as news writing, storytelling, interviewing, photography, and multimedia reporting.
- Create a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel encouraged to explore and express themselves through journalism.
- Facilitate hands-on activities, projects, and discussions that promote creativity, critical thinking, and skill development in journalism.
- Incorporate relevant educational resources, technology, and real-world examples to enhance learning experiences.
- Foster a supportive and collaborative classroom community by building positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Assess student progress, provide constructive feedback, and adjust teaching strategies as needed to ensure student success.
- Collaborate with other staff members to coordinate enrichment activities, events, and outings.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, student performance, and program evaluation data.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working with children and/or teaching in an educational setting.
- Passion for and expertise in journalism, writing, or related fields.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
- Commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students.
- Flexibility, creativity, and enthusiasm for engaging students in hands-on learning experiences.
This position is part-time and requires availability during after-school hours.
