Job Description
The Washington Post seeks an accomplished and innovative journalist to serve as deputy editor of the National desk, driving ambitious coverage of the U.S. and American life.
The role requires dexterity, organization, and a passion for making complex subjects accessible. The deputy editor will work with national correspondents, breaking news teams, and education beat reporters to deepen our coverage of topics like education, religion, personal freedoms, demographics, and urban and rural America.
Responsibilities
- Partner with the National editor to drive daily coverage, set priorities, and elevate copy.
- Communicate and collaborate across newsroom teams.
- Encourage production of compelling stories with visuals, audio, or graphics.
- Foster a supportive work culture that promotes staff development and high achievement.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 7 years of professional journalism experience.
- Distinguished editing or reporting track record.
- Vision for elevating National coverage to engage new audiences.
- Collaborative spirit and excellent communication skills.
- Supervisory experience is a plus.

The salary range is $154,000–$230,200, depending on experience and qualifications. The position may include bonuses or incentives. The policy requires five days per week in-office work, with exceptions for newsgathering and travel.
