Job Description
Position Summary: The Library Associate II - Program Assistant combines the core responsibilities of a library associate, including regular public desk service, with a focus on supporting programming staff with the preparation, promotion, and delivery of library events. This role works closely with programmers and other library staff to assist in offering engaging and high-quality programs that enhance the library's mission and serve diverse audiences.
This position requires flexibility, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate library programs and events. Out of library hours may be included in schedule.
Principal Duties:
- Provide support in the preparation, setup, promotion, and facilitation of library programs, including workshops, storytimes, book clubs, community events, educational classes, and large-scale events such as concerts, festivals, and art fairs.
- Prepare program spaces, including arranging furniture, setting up technology, and organizing materials. Ensure that all equipment and supplies are ready for use.
- Assist in promoting library programs by designing, printing, and distributing printed materials, updating digital signage, and engaging with patrons to inform them about upcoming events.
- Foster positive interactions with patrons of all ages, respond to inquiries about programs, and encourage participation.
- Track attendance, compile feedback, and prepare monthly report
- Work with internal teams, volunteers, and external partners.
- Perform clerical tasks related to programming, such as scheduling, record-keeping, and maintaining program supplies.
- Serve the public in a friendly, professional manner.
- Provide desk coverage; assist patrons of all ages with reference questions and readers' advisory.
- Provide services to patrons at all public service points.
- Assist with opening and/or closing duties; assist in maintaining the orderly appearance of the library.
- Process library card applications and verify patron accounts.
- Process reserves, holds and renewals.
- May schedule meeting rooms for library events and outside groups.
- Assist other branch staff in any department when needed.
- Act as Staff-in-Charge in the absence of the Branch Manager and Department Heads.
- Enforce Code of Conduct and other policies/procedures proactively and impartially.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the library's mission.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree preferred; high school graduate or equivalent with some college required.
- 3-5 years of experience in library work or a related field.
- Experience in programming, event coordination, or customer service is highly desirable.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with attention to detail.
- Creativity and enthusiasm for developing engaging programs.
- Ability to work with limited supervision and work independently and with a team.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- KDLA certification or ability to obtain certification (if working 100+ hours per month).
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Interpersonal skills to effectively deal with the public and coworkers in a positive, professional manner.
- Experience using windows-based PCs and software; Internet and e-mail experience; ability and willingness to learn, adapt to and teach new technologies.
- Light to moderate physical demands including the ability to bend, kneel, reach to retrieve library materials and carry items weighing 20-30lbs, and can push book trucks or bins weighing 100lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods during programs or events.
