Farrar, Straus and Giroux is seeking a Senior Editor to acquire for, and spearhead new initiatives on, the nonfiction list. The ideal candidate will have a passion for nonfiction books that are innovative, idea-driven, writerly, and draw a broad audience. A candidate should bring a strong record of successful publications that reflects a clear editorial vision: categories of particular interest include science, nature and the environment, spirituality, and psychology. They should be excited by intelligent, high-concept books with a more practical orientation– handbooks for a better life and a better world that challenge readers to think and live differently. This is an opportunity to expand skills in creative publishing, teamwork, and building a nonfiction program. The position reports to the Editor in Chief and works closely with the Editorial Director of Nonfiction as well as the rest of the editorial team.
What you'll do:
- Publish 8-10 books per year
- Commission and acquire a range of nonfiction titles with strong critical, sales, and backlist potential
- Seek out opportunities for growth on the list
- Develop and edit manuscripts at the structural and line level
- Help to shape and build an author’s career across titles
- Think programmatically and build a cohesive list
- Act as a liaison between in-house and external partners
- Partner with in-house colleagues as well as authors and agents to strategically position books to their broadest and best audiences
- Coordinate in a collaborative, positive, timely manner across departments
- Maintain publishing schedules for a full list of titles
- Contribute to the editorial team and paperback program via mentorship and idea generation
What you'll bring:
- 8+ years of book publishing experience or the equivalent
- Highly developed editorial skills
- Extensive contacts in writing, journalism, agent communities and beyond
- Exceptional writing abilities
- A genuine interest in working collaboratively and supporting the success of the team as a whole
- Experience working with a team, communicating in a highly professional manner, and managing a variety of needs and perspectives
This role will have an annual salary of $80,000 - $100,000.
