General Notes
KUT/KUTX is hiring a part-time multimedia producer to join our award-winning team of visual journalists.
We collaborate with KUT News, Texas Standard, and KUTX music digital teams to present visual packages on digital platforms and social media. We cover breaking news and events along with coverage of local music festivals, KUTX music events and in-studio musical performances.
Applicant must be a strong still and video journalist who is inspired to find innovative ways to tell stories visually, has strong problem-solving skills, is able to work well with a team and solo, and adheres to strong journalism ethics.
This part time position will work up to 19 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits.
Responsibilities
- Filming and editing Studio 1A musical performances. An understanding of both the local and regional music scene is helpful.
- Coverage of both planned and breaking news events with time-sensitive image and video delivery.
- Creating and editing news and feature video content
- Planning, attending meetings and brainstorming both music and news coverage.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
- One year of professional photojournalism experience in a newsroom or media environment. Comparable experience such as freelance work, commercial photography and daily news organization internships would be considered.
- Demonstrate understanding of journalistic purpose and commitment to our mission to connect people across Austin and the Central Texas area
- Experience with visual and multimedia storytelling
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with DSLR and mirrorless cameras
- Advanced understanding of photo and video editing software. Must be proficient in Adobe Lightroom, Premiere and Photoshop
- Demonstrated excellence in visual and reporting skills
- Understands AP style/strong caption writer
- Possess strong editorial news judgment and photojournalistic ethics
- Able to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment
- Exceptional organizational, communication and writing skills
- Understanding of user experience trends and best practices for visual presentations
- Experience creating unique content for a variety of platforms
- Enthusiastic team player
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of experience as a photographer/videographer/multimedia producer for a media organization.
- Two years of experience visually covering news, culture and live music.
- Experience producing social media visual content.
- Experience in multi-camera video shoots. Experience live streaming.
- Experience producing animations and other graphic elements.
- Ability to schedule and conduct video interviews.
- Knowledge of photo/video cameras and formats outside DSLR cameras.
$20.00 - $22.00/hour
Working Conditions
- Must have access to reliable transportation
- This work is a combination of field work, office and remote work. Fieldwork may include travel across the region including during inclement weather events.

- Work hours are dependent on assignments, no set hours. Assignments will include some evenings and weekends, depending on news/music coverage needs.
- Lifting/carrying/moving equipment up to 30 pounds is sometimes required.

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
